| 29 REGIONAL Coresteel Buildings Hawke’s Bay Corebuild Group, the licensed distributor for Coresteel Buildings Hawkes Bay, is showcasing the speed, flexibility and innovation of modern steel construction through its work on the new ITM Napier development that is transforming a former industrial site into a purpose-built trade hub for Hawke’s Bay. Construction began in November 2025 following the demolition of existing buildings on the 7,767sqm site with completion scheduled for October this year. The project includes a 1,871sqm trade shop and bulk store designed specifically for ITM Napier, adapting a successful concept previously developed for ITM Taupō, also a Coresteel Buildings project, while tailoring it to the Napier site and business requirements. “It demonstrates we can complete projects in a tight timeframe, quickly turning around design, consent and consent approval,” says Corebuild Group General Manager Alan Cusack. “The speed of our design, fabrication and onsite erection gained so much time compared with competitors. The relationships through the Coresteel network with suppliers allowed the project to go at the speed of light.” ITM Napier is a locally owned and operated building supply merchant led by owners Adrian Mooney and Andrew Milne. As part of the nationwide ITM co-operative the business combines the buying power of a national brand with the personalised service of an independent merchant, serving everyone from professional builders to DIY customers across Hawke’s Bay. The ITM Napier bulk store is built using Coresteel’s proprietary DonoBeam structural system, providing a 25-metre clear span and an 8.45-metre knee height without the need for internal trusses. “The DonoBeam system uses tapered steel box beams engineered to achieve long clear spans and reduces the amount of steel required. This gives ITM uninterrupted space for truck access, racking and day-to-day operations. The prefabricated design also enables faster installation reducing labour requirements and time spent on site. Research has shown the system can also significantly reduce embodied carbon compared with conventional structural steel systems,” explains Alan. The adjoining trade shop uses Coresteel Buildings Cold Rolled Steel System and features a two-level office, an open retail floor and polished architectural concrete flooring finished with Exotec cladding. Alan says the patented system eliminates the traditional knee brace found in many steel buildings, creating more unobstructed floor space for storage, vehicle access and retail operations as well as simplifying construction. “This project really demonstrates the advantages Coresteel’s structural systems offer commercial clients seeking efficient, functional buildings.” He says Coresteel’s design-and-build model streamlines the construction process by providing engineering, design, manufacturing and construction management through one supplier. Innovation has become a defining feature of the business with proprietary software allowing real-time design changes and efficient project management from concept through to completion. The ITM Napier project is one of several significant commercial developments recently completed by the Hawke’s Bay distributor. Recent projects include the new Napier Pirates Rugby Club facilities at Tamatea, a water treatment plant at Waipawa, and East Coast Frame and Truss’s nearly 2,000sqm facility at Whakatu. “Coresteel is known for delivering unique design and build solutions, catering to a spectrum of diverse clients and sectors. It’s about delivering buildings that are smarter, faster and more efficient to build that give customers exactly the functionality they need and the ITM Napier project is a great example of that.” A Smarter Build for Napier ITM BRAND NEW STORE UNDER CONSTRUCTION DUE TO OPEN NOVEMBER 2026 As a locally operated business, Napier ITM is proud to supply the community with professional advice and quality building supplies.
