The facility, which became operational in July, represents the culmination of several years of planning as NZ Post fine-tuned its business model to reflect the changing face of post in New Zealand — fewer letters, and more courier packages. The project saw the consolidation of the company’s Napier and Hastings distribution centres into a single, purpose-built hub designed to improve efficiency and accommodate future growth. As a specialist project management and property development company, APGL worked alongside NZ Post throughout the planning process, helping define the project’s requirements before identifying and delivering the ideal solution. Specialising in both new developments and refurbishment projects, APGL — led by directors Warren Ladbrook and Gordon Johnstone — brings together planners, designers, architects and industry professionals to deliver tailored property solutions that meet each client’s operational needs while supporting long-term investment outcomes. After assessing NZ Post’s operational requirements, APGL identified a site within its own portfolio that met all the necessary criteria. The location provided the space required for a modern distribution centre while allowing room for future expansion as parcel volumes continue to grow. The completed facility now serves as the central hub for Hawke’s Bay, supporting a fleet of 54 courier and rural delivery drivers. Mail and parcels arrive at the centre via six–eight delivery agents daily, before being sorted and dispatched across the region. “It is a purpose-built building that ticks all their boxes,” Warren says. A key contributor to the project’s success was Tuatara Structures, which led the design and construction of the structural steel building. Warren says Tuatara worked closely with both APGL and NZ Post during the design phase, helping refine the project brief and ensuring the building met the operational requirements of the tenant. “Tuatara has been excellent,” he says. “They came to us with a design-and-build focus, and they diligently worked through any issues we or the tenant had while carrying the cost and effort involved.” He says Tuatara also provided valuable cost certainty throughout the project. “They gave us the security of a cost estimate and held that for many months. “We worked hard to secure the job and ultimately delivered the result on time and on budget.” Although APGL operates with a modest team of two, the company has established a strong reputation for delivering complex commercial developments across Auckland, Taupō and Hawke’s Bay. Its philosophy centres on developing long-term relationships with both investors and tenants, creating buildings that continue to perform well long after construction is complete. “We focus on creating long-term relationships with good tenants and good products, delivering buildings that suit the tenants over the long term,” Warren says.
