Hāwera-based civil earthworks company, Excavat, is sharpening its focus on subdivision development as demand continues to build across Taranaki and surrounding regions. Managing director, Jeff Prestidge, says the business has come through a challenging trading period, where securing consistent work meant taking on a wide mix of projects across earthworks, civil construction, and rural contracting. He says that environment has driven a clear shift in strategy, with the company now narrowing its focus towards subdivision work as its preferred area of growth supported by its broad in-house capability, as well as steady regional demand and increasing land development activity. “Subdivisions are the best fit for our capabilities, bringing together earthmoving, drainage, roading, retaining, and utilities installation in one integrated delivery model,” Jeff says. “We have developed a strong in-house team, which allows us to complete full site packages without reliance on external contractors, and that end-to-end approach improves efficiency, coordination, and outcomes for our clients.” Excavat is active across Taranaki, with ongoing work in New Plymouth, Stratford, and Hāwera, supported by staff based in multiple locations across the region. Jeff says Stratford, in particular, is seeing strong activity, driven in part by farm sales and generational land changes that are creating more subdivision and lifestyle development opportunities. One of the company’s standout recent projects was the new visitor centre at Mount Taranaki, where Excavat was responsible for challenging earthworks in a sensitive alpine environment. Machinery and materials had to be transported up the mountain, and the team faced weather delays during winter conditions, including snowfall that temporarily halted progress. Jeff says working alongside the Department of Conservation required careful environmental management and strict controls around vegetation and site disturbance, while the curved architectural design added further complexity to the build platform. The project also prompted a significant expansion of the workforce, with additional specialist staff brought in to meet delivery requirements. Jeff says many of those roles have since been retained, strengthening the company’s long-term capacity across civil and subdivision work. Excavat is also delivering infrastructure for elderly housing at Bell Block, including drainage, kerbing, footpaths, and car park construction as part of a wider residential development. In addition, the company is completing subdivision works at Spotswood for Kāinga Ora, covering site preparation for 12 new homes, driveway construction, drainage installation, and exposed aggregate concrete finishes in collaboration with partners, Peppers Construction and Maxim Civil. Jeff says rural work remains a consistent part of the business, particularly during strong farming seasons, with demand for upgraded access tracks, races, drainage systems, and concrete structures across agricultural properties. While not always utilising the full scope of the company’s services, he says farm projects provide strong alignment with Excavat’s earthworks and drainage capability. Excavat is also seeing increasing opportunity in civil roading and three waters infrastructure, where its ability to deliver integrated packages is highly valued by councils and developers managing complex sites. Jeff says Excavat is positioning itself for sustained growth by continuing to refine its focus on subdivision and civil infrastructure while maintaining flexibility across rural, commercial, and public sector projects. He says the company’s strength lies in its local knowledge, broad technical capability, and ability to scale quickly to meet demand.
