For ITI NZ area manager Shane Wilson, the recognition is significant not only for SB Joinery owner Scotty Beales and his team, but also for rural New Zealand. "The bigger centres often attract the attention, so to see a business from a small town in our area take out the top award is a fantastic result for the local industry and the wider community." Based in Carterton, ITI NZ services customers across the lower North Island from Wellington through to New Plymouth, Taupō, and Gisborne. The company supplies specialist timber products to joiners, builders, architects, and manufacturers, providing the raw materials behind many award winning projects. Shane says SB Joinery's success demonstrates what can be achieved when quality materials are combined with exceptional workmanship and finishing expertise. "This is where the magic begins," he says. "The timber is the starting point, but Scotty and his team transform it into something special through their craftsmanship, finishes, and attention to detail." While construction activity has softened in some sectors, Shane says demand for natural products continues to grow as homeowners seek authentic and sustainable design solutions. "Solid timber is making a comeback. People are looking for natural materials and they are seeing the beautiful results that can be achieved by guys like Scotty.” Originally established as a specialist timber wholesaler, ITI NZ has grown into one of New Zealand’s largest suppliers of specialty timber and cladding systems. The business sources products from around the world while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability through FSC and PEFC certified supply chains. ITI NZ continues to invest heavily in its future. A recently completed $4 million expansion has increased undercover storage capacity to 6500sqm, strengthening its ability to supply customers nationwide. At the same time, ITI NZ has introduced a cadetship programme aimed at attracting more young people into the timber industry. "We operate in a highly competitive market and we cannot stand still," Shane says. "We have to keep innovating and investing in people." The award-winning project, designed by longtime collaborator Alistair Cox Architecture, transformed a compact 3sqm room into an elegant timber gin bar featuring sweeping curves, handcrafted cabinetry, custom wall panelling, and a circular timber ceiling frame with an antique mirror insert.
