100 | NZ Strong Group REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT T T Anne Boswell Innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to finding practical solutions to complex construction challenges have earned NZ Strong Group national recognition, with the company taking out a NZ Commercial Project award for its work on the Wattyl Warehouse and Dangerous Goods Store. The award-winning development demonstrates exactly what NZ Strong has become known for – finding innovative yet practical solutions for tricky problems. “Our objective is to gain recognition for delivering the more interesting and challenging projects that add to a better community and built environment,” says NZ Strong Group director, Lyndon Evans. Owned by Stride Property, the Wattyl Warehouse and Dangerous Goods Store presented significant engineering challenges from the outset. Built on a peat-laden site with a high water table, the project required extensive ground stabilisation, including the installation of 2604 piles and substantial subgrade preparation to ensure the long-term resilience of the structure. Rather than relying on conventional construction methods, NZ Strong introduced an innovative sequencing approach by erecting the steel portal frame before installing the precast concrete panels. This eliminated the need for temporary propping, while improving safety. Sustainability was another defining feature of the project. NZ Strong Group took out a NZ Commercial Project award for its work on the Wattyl Warehouse and Dangerous Goods Store. Innovation the focus Awarded a prestigious Green Star 5 rating, the facility incorporates solar- energy generation, rainwater recycling, and the repurposing of timber waste generated during construction. The Wattyl Warehouse and Dangerous Goods Store project reflects NZ Strong Group’s reputation as the construction company clients turn to when projects involve difficult sites, tight programmes or complex designs. “Rather than striving to become the country’s largest construction company, NZ Strong’s ambition is to be the smartest,” Lyndon says. Led by Lyndon and fellow directors, Chris Hunter and John Overton, the business places innovation and communication at the centre of every project. The leadership team remains closely involved throughout construction, ensuring clients receive practical solutions, transparent communication and no surprises along the way. That approach aligns with the company’s vision of becoming New Zealand’s most trusted and respected construction company. Building lasting relationships is a core value, with every project focused on creating win-win outcomes for clients, consultants, subcontractors and the wider community. NZ Strong’s work spans a diverse range of sectors, from commercial to education, healthcare, infrastructure, aged care, recreation, and heritage projects. Across each, the company seeks opportunities to challenge conventional thinking and develop solutions that improve both construction outcomes and the built environment. Sustainability is equally embedded within the business. As a member of the New Zealand Green Building Council, NZ Strong is committed to reducing environmental impacts, while supporting local suppliers and Māori and Pasifika businesses. With a growing team of Green Star Accredited Professionals and a goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, the company continues to invest in building a more sustainable future. “Central to our objective is innovation and discovering the next breakthrough that the construction industry will universally adopt in years to follow,” Lyndon says. “There is no place more likely for this to happen than a New Zealand-based, mid-sized commercial main contractor with a highly experienced team.” With the latest plaudit under its belt, the NZ Strong Group is one step closer to its vision of becoming the most trusted and respected construction company in New Zealand.
