For Auckland's Snowplanet, reducing those energy costs while improving resilience was becoming increasingly important, particularly as energy prices continued to fluctuate. The solution now sits on a hillside beside the facility, visible from Auckland's Northern Motorway: a 1.05MW solar installation developed by leading renewable energy company Sunergise. For many New Zealand businesses, the appeal of solar energy is obvious - lower power bills, reduced carbon emissions, and greater resilience against the kind of global energy shocks that rattled the country in early 2026. The barrier, more often than not, has been the upfront cost. A solar installation of any meaningful scale demands significant capital, and for businesses already managing tight margins, that investment can feel out of reach. The environmental benefits are equally significant. “The carbon oset will be more than 100 tonnes per year,” he adds. The installation itself presented a considerable engineering challenge. The system is ground-mounted on a steep site beside the Snowplanet hall. “Getting the optimal panel orientation precisely right - critical for maximising energy output - required precise engineering and execution given the gradient of the terrain. Particular attention was given to retaining the natural contours of the land throughout the project,” explains Andrew Murdoch, Engineer & Program Manager at Sunergise. Snowplanet is far from an isolated example. Sunergise has delivered some of New Zealand's most ambitious solar projects, including the country's largest rooftop solar system, a 5.3 megawatt-peak installation at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and the second largest, a 2.3-megawatt system at Mānawa Bay near Auckland Airport. To date, Sunergise has installed more than 50 megawatts of solar capacity and enabled a cumulative carbon oset of 27,000 tonnes of CO₂.
