T T Russell Fredric Savouring the rewards Savory Construction Three major projects and three gold awards and two supreme titles at the 2026 Master Builders Commercial Project Awards, have capped a standout year for Auckland contractor, Savory Construction. The company’s award-winning projects ranged from a premium retail development at Auckland Airport to luxury penthouses atop New Zealand’s tallest residential tower, highlighting the breadth of capability that has helped Savory build its reputation across the commercial construction sector. Savory Construction interiors manager, Dylan Tomlin, says the recognition reflects the effort invested by teams across the business, along with the commitment of its suppliers and subcontractors. The company’s two National Category winning projects were Manawa Bay Premium Outlet Centre and the Pacifica Penthouses, while Beca Project Momentum (Site 6) secured gold recognition, in addition to the gold awards for the other two projects. Manawa Bay anchors the Auckland Airport precinct with a large-scale retail development completed under significant operational and environmental constraints. The $179 million project delivered 35,000sqm of retail space alongside 45,000sqm of car parking, completed on time and within budget. For Savory, the project was significant, not only because of its scale, but also because it showcased the company’s ability to bring together expertise from across the business. “At the time it was one of the largest projects we had done as a company,” Dylan says. “We had our construction arm running it, as well as our joinery and interior divisions doing works. Across the board, we had quite a good range of skills going across the project.” The Pacifica Penthouses presented a very different challenge. Located at the top of Auckland’s tallest residential tower, the project involved delivering two exceptionally high-end penthouse suites within a live building environment. Every aspect of the work required careful planning, from transporting premium materials to the upper floors to managing access restrictions and working around existing residents. “The challenges were pretty high,” Dylan says. “We could only use the lifts for an hour a day in the early mornings, and we were dealing with large-format marble and stone, so there were a lot of things you had to think outside the box for that you wouldn’t come across on an everyday basis.” The project also required close coordination between designers, consultants and the construction team to overcome logistical and technical challenges while maintaining the quality expected of a luxury development. The awards highlight a business model that has become a key point of difference for Savory Construction. The company comprises construction, interiors, joinery and maintenance divisions, allowing it to deliver projects ranging from major commercial developments through to specialist fit-outs and bespoke joinery solutions. “We’re pretty well-rounded, we can deliver any project,” says Dylan. “Having the joinery factory means we can work in-house and deal with things directly, rather than adding another layer of complexity and communication.” While the awards recognise recent achievements, they also reflect the foundations built during 85 years in business.
