Engineering solutions built to last have shaped East West Engineering for more than 45 years, and now the Australian manufacturer is strengthening its New Zealand presence through Specialised Handling Equipment. One of Australia’s best-known engineered materials handling manufacturers, East West Engineering has spent more than four decades refining equipment that makes lifting, transporting and storing heavy loads safer and more efficient. Today, the product range spans mechanical attachments, hydraulic attachments, warehouse equipment and construction equipment, used throughout construction, manufacturing, agriculture, logistics and other industrial sectors. The business traces its origins to 1974, when founder Ron King sold his Ducati motorcycle to buy tools and a van for a fencing business. As projects became larger, the company progressed into industrial metalwork, before securing major public works contracts around Sydney, including work at the Powerhouse Museum and Maritime Museum. It was there that Ron identified a shortage of well-engineered, certified lifting equipment, prompting him to design and manufacture a lifting jib for his own use – a product that would become the first of many engineered lifting solutions. The business formally established East West Engineering as a specialist design division in the early 1990s, before shifting its entire focus to proprietary products by 2000. Investment in engineering, technical capability and manufacturing has supported continued expansion. Today, the company operates from a custom-built 10,000sqm manufacturing facility in Sydney, producing equipment distributed throughout Australia and exported internationally. Its catalogue includes thousands of standard products alongside thousands of custom designs, each developed to solve a specific materials handling challenge. “We classify it into four categories; mechanical attachments, hydraulic attachments, warehouse equipment and general construction equipment,” says... While East West Engineering previously operated directly in New Zealand, about two years ago Specialised Handling Equipment was established as its exclusive New Zealand stocking partner – importing, stocking and distributing the Australian- designed-and-manufactured range nationwide. Specialised Handling Equipment is based in Glenfield, Auckland, and director Alex Blackett says the whole focus of the business is supplying quality, certified, materials handling equipment. “It’s a very specific product that does one thing really well. The whole reason for designing these products is to improve the Health & Safety by reducing people’s interaction with the load.” One example is a hydraulically operated concrete kibble that allows concrete to be poured remotely, removing the need for a worker to stand alongside the suspended load. Innovations such as this reduce operator exposure while improving efficiency, with similar demand driving growth in construction equipment and purpose-built forklift attachments. Recent demand has been strongest for construction equipment and purpose-built crane, forklift and telehandler attachments, including jibs, spreaders and other specialised lifting equipment. The product range also covers agricultural equipment, with attachments designed to increase the versatility of tractors and other machinery. Equipment such as hay bale grabs, bulk bag lifters and fork positioners enables existing machinery to handle a wider variety of loads, reducing the need for dedicated and costly equipment. East West Engineering products are engineered to relevant standards and backed by engineering documentation, compliance information, operator instructions, and risk assessments. “Customers know they’re getting equipment that’s fit for purpose and fully supported, rather than simply another imported attachment,” says Alex.
