T T Karen Phelps Coleman Civil is proving that age is no barrier to success, with the fast-growing business taking on major commercial, residential and infrastructure projects just four years after opening its doors. Founded in 2022 by now 25-year-old director, Tom Coleman, the Auckland-based company has expanded rapidly and now employs a team of around 14 people. Working across Auckland, Waikato and Northland, Coleman Civil has earned a reputation for tackling projects ranging from architectural residential work through to large-scale civil infrastructure. “We do a unique range of work, rather than focusing on one thing,” says Tom. “By covering commercial, residential and infrastructure, this keeps the work varied and gives our team experience across a wide range of projects.” That diversity has become one of the company’s greatest strengths with the ability to deliver everything from foundations and driveways to in-situ concrete construction, large commercial slabs and structural concrete work. The company’s youthful workforce is another defining feature. “We’ve built a young, enthusiastic team that’s passionate about what it does,” says Tom. “Everyone takes pride in producing quality work, no matter the size of the project. From smaller pours to large-scale civil works, we focus on delivering an efficient service with clean finishes every time.” That commitment has seen Coleman Civil trusted with some significant contracts. One standout project was construction of the new bus station on Spedding Road in Whenuapai, where the team laid and finished 8500sqm of concrete. The scale of the work required careful planning and dedication, with crews beginning at 2am so large sections could be poured and finished during daylight hours. Another milestone was work on Walmsley Bridge in Favona, where the company poured a 500sqm bridge deck forming part of one of the area’s main roads. While major infrastructure projects demonstrate its capability, Coleman Civil is equally comfortable delivering high-end residential work. One of its more distinctive jobs involved creating a 300sqm architectural driveway for clients Sally Ridge and John Darby, featuring an exposed longburn pebble mix with integrated lighting throughout the concrete. “Every project is different, and that’s something we really enjoy,” says Tom. “Whether it’s a bridge deck, a commercial slab or an architectural driveway, we approach every job with the same attention to detail.” Although the business has grown quickly, Tom remains heavily involved in every stage of each project, from planning through to on-site execution. Having entered the concrete industry at just 14 years old, before establishing his own business at 22, he has accumulated more than a decade of practical experience, despite his young age. That combination of youthful energy and extensive hands-on knowledge has helped shape the company’s culture while building strong relationships with clients. Looking ahead, growth remains firmly on the agenda. “We’re focused on continuing to expand and maintaining the quality and reliability people expect from us,” says Tom. “We aim to set the standard in concrete and provide end-to-end solutions that keep projects moving and clients reassured.
