Powered by AI, the capabilities of CCTV could make a marked change to the bottom line of many businesses, solving problems they have not traditionally been used for, says director of Cable Systems Ben Thompson. “There has been a significant evolution in CCTV systems and what they enable you to do now is quite staggering. CCTV is extra eyeballs in your business and it’s a matter of us telling it what we want to see,” says Ben. “It’s a real leap in technology and the advantages for businesses are endless. We are finding it blows people away,” he says. As an example he says modern AI-powered CCTV systems can now search recorded footage using plain-language text commands. A warehouse manager, for example, can type a search query asking the system to locate every instance a yellow truck passed a specific gate. The AI processes the request and returns results in seconds. What once required hours of manual review now takes moments. “It’s unlimited what it can do. The customer can tell us their problems and usually there is a solution CCTV can fix,” says Ben. The practical applications stretch well beyond security. Businesses are using the technology to monitor productivity on factory floors and in warehousing environments, tracking how long particular processes take and receiving automatic notifications on their phones when something falls outside expected parameters. A piece of freight arriving at a warehouse can be tracked across every camera it appears on, creating a clear and searchable trail. If damage is later discovered, the footage can confirm precisely where and when it occurred. That capability, Ben says, is proving transformative for businesses that previously had little way of resolving disputes or monitoring operations with any degree of precision. The thermal imaging work Cable Systems undertook for a boutique cinema group offers a particularly striking example of the technology’s versatility. The cinemas were struggling with patrons covertly filming screenings and pirating content. Working with the client, Cable Systems configured a thermal imaging system calibrated to detect the heat signatures of recording devices. “Anything registering between 40 and 60 degrees for more than five minutes would trigger an automatic alert to the cinema manager, who could then investigate. The problem was resolved without the need for additional staff or invasive searches,” says Ben. That problem-solving philosophy sits at the heart of how Cable Systems approaches every client relationship. Ben, who joined the business as an apprentice in 1989 and took over leadership in 2004 before bringing Ryan on board as co-owner in 2014, is proud that many of the company’s earliest clients remain with it today. “Our aim is to have long-term clients,” says Ben. “Customers can rely on us and trust us for years and years and that reflects our focus on customers.” Cable Systems, which traces its roots back to 1988 when founder Ron Tonkin began laying cable during electrical work at McDonnell Douglas, has grown into a nationwide supplier and installer of network cabling, CCTV, WiFi and electrical systems. With offices in Auckland and Christchurch, it services clients across New Zealand, offering what Ben describes as a genuine one-stop shop — one call, one team, one standard of service, wherever the job may be. As Cable Systems approaches its 40th year in operation, Ben says the focus remains on what it has always been — treating customers as a privilege and making certain technology keeps pace with their needs.
