Climate Surfaces is marking 25 years in business with a growing product portfolio, international partnerships, and a commitment to innovation that has helped establish the New Zealand company as a leader in sustainable surface technologies. Founded in 2001 by Jeff Stewart and Kyle True, Climate Surfaces has grown from a startup exploring the potential of powder coating wood products, into a large-scale powder coater, powder producer, and manufacturer supplying the construction sector throughout New Zealand and Australia. Climate Surfaces pioneered the application of powder coating technology to non-metal building materials including MDF, plywood, and plasterboard, creating products that deliver durability, aesthetics, and environmental benefits while reducing the need for traditional painting and finishing systems. Jeff says reaching the 25-year milestone is a significant achievement. “We were young guys with a dream when we started, and we’ve been fortunate to grow alongside the industry.” The business began when Jeff identified an opportunity to diversify traditional powder coating applications beyond metal products. Working alongside his school-friend Kyle, the pair spent years developing and refining technology that could successfully coat timber-based substrates without compromising performance. Support from Carter Holt Harvey during the company’s early development proved critical. The organisation provided access to industry leaders and development opportunities that helped transform the concept into a commercial reality. “We spent several years prototyping and learning,” Kyle says. “There were plenty of technical challenges along the way, but having partners who believed in the technology made a huge difference.” Today, Climate Surfaces’ technology is used across a wide range of commercial construction applications. Its products include Climateline pre-finished wall lining systems and Ecotile ceiling tiles, both designed to streamline construction programmes while delivering durable, low maintenance finishes. Climate Surfaces also continues to provide specialist coating services for manufacturers seeking to add value to building products through enhanced performance and factory applied finishes. A major milestone came shortly before Covid when Climate Surfaces commissioned its own powder manufacturing plant after two decades of purchasing materials from external suppliers. Kyle says the move represented a significant investment but has strengthened the company’s ability to innovate and respond quickly to customer requirements. Initially supplying powder for internal use only, the company is now offering products to powder coaters seeking low temperature technology that can reduce energy use and cost. “For years we were told it was too difficult and too expensive. We decided it was time to take control of that part of the process ourselves and it has opened up a lot of opportunities.” The investment has enabled the business to develop specialised powder formulations while reducing development times and increasing service levels. Both founders credit the company’s success to the support of its shareholders, staff, customers, suppliers, and long-standing partners. “We’ve got team members and directors who have been with us for more than 20 years and customers who have supported us from the beginning,” Jeff says. “Our success has always been a team effort. Without those relationships we simply wouldn’t be where we are today.”
