T T Russell Fredric A legacy built on engineering, practical problem-solving and customer trust has seen MacEwans Pumping Systems grow with New Zealand for 130 years, adapting to changing industries while staying true to its foundations. Established in 1896 by James MacEwan, the business began at a time when New Zealand was developing its agricultural, industrial and municipal infrastructure. Over the decades, MacEwans has supplied pumping solutions for farms, factories, drainage schemes, wastewater networks and flood protection projects, becoming one of the country’s longest-established engineering businesses. Today, the company integrates internationally recognised pump brands into the solutions it offers alongside its own engineered product ranges developed specifically for New Zealand conditions. General manager Tom Bailey says that combination has been central to the company’s longevity. “We’ve never been simply a pump distributor. Engineering has always been part of who we are. We’ve designed, manufactured, repaired and supported pumping systems for generations of customers, and that practical knowledge continues to shape the way we do business.” That engineering capability is reflected in the company’s Dinflow, Dinbloc and Linebloc centrifugal pump ranges, which have served industrial, commercial and municipal customers for decades. Another standout achievement has been the MacEwans PPF axial-flow flood pump, developed specifically for New Zealand conditions and still protecting communities more than 50 years after many of the original installations. “The fact that many of those pumps installed during the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s are still operating says a lot about the quality of the original design. Just as importantly, it reflects the value of local manufacturing, ongoing technical expertise and having spare parts available long after the initial installation.” MacEwans’ growth has also been shaped by enduring supplier partnerships. The company has represented Tsurumi pumps in New Zealand for more than 50 years and became the manufacturer’s first international distributor. Since 2001 it has also been the sole New Zealand distributor for Gorman-Rupp pumps, strengthening its position in self-priming wastewater and industrial pumping applications while complementing the company’s in-house technical capability. “Those relationships allow us to combine world-class products with local knowledge and engineering expertise. Customers know they’re getting proven equipment backed by people who understand how it performs in New Zealand conditions and who are there to support it throughout its working life.” Like many long-established businesses, MacEwans has navigated changing markets, economic cycles and evolving customer expectations. More recently, its transition into new ownership has provided additional resources while preserving the company’s name, technical expertise and long-standing values. “Every business that reaches 130 years has had to adapt. The ownership may change and technology certainly changes, but the values that built the business — quality, reliability, engineering knowledge and customer relationships — have remained remarkably consistent.” Many employees have spent decades with MacEwans, passing technical knowledge from one generation to the next, while customer relationships often extend across generations as well. “We’re incredibly proud that customers continue to come back to us because they trust the advice, the service and the expertise they receive. “Reaching 130 years is something everyone connected with MacEwans can celebrate, and it gives us a strong foundation to continue providing practical pumping solutions backed by engineering knowledge and local support.”
