That helps us deliver a better result.” Restoring ageing buildings is rarely straightforward, but for Hamilton-based The Reno Guys, giving older structures a new lease on life has been the foundation of the business. Owner, Dan Grimshaw, underwent his apprenticeship through the Army before spending time in the United Kingdom working on house refurbishments and loft conversions. After returning to New Zealand, he established The Reno Guys in 2013, gradually building a reputation for tackling renovation projects that require experience, planning and problem-solving. “We chose that market from the get-go. It wasn’t about chasing the glory; it was about building our team, creating consistent work and becoming specialists in a space where there’s always something to do,” Dan says. The company’s focus on renovations has helped it stand apart in a market often dominated by new-build specialists. A sister company, Fervour Construction, was established in 2021 to undertake selected new-home projects, but to date, renovation work remains at the heart of the business. Experience is particularly important when working on existing buildings, where no two projects are ever quite the same, Dan says. “You’re moving in with the homeowner, dealing with old construction methods, and blending the old with the new. The nuances that come with renovations can only really be learnt through experience.” One project showcasing those skills is the major refurbishment of Holy Name Catholic Parish in Raglan. The church first approached The Reno Guys nearly two years ago, beginning a lengthy process of discussions, investigations, pricing and planning before construction finally got underway. The project involves stripping the cedar board-and-batten-clad building back to its structural frame before undertaking a complete reclad and reroof. New double-glazing, wall insulation and ceiling insulation are also being installed to significantly improve the building’s performance and comfort. “The cladding had reached the end of its life. There were questions around whether the building should be demolished, but after investigating the framing we found it was in remarkably good condition. It would have been a crying shame to lose it,” says Dan. Built in 1970, the church’s distinctive design has proven well-suited to refurbishment. Rather than altering its character, the project focuses on preserving the structure while ensuring it remains fit for purpose for decades to come. A large wrapped scaffold surrounds the building, allowing trades to work systematically through each stage of construction. This approach has enabled repairs, insulation, cavity systems and exterior finishing work to be completed efficiently, while maintaining quality throughout the build. “It’s about getting the whole building into a system where everyone is working in the same order and towards the same outcome. That helps us deliver a better result.” The project follows The Reno Guys’ involvement in the restoration of the nearby Te Mata Hall, another community-focused project that demonstrated the company’s ability to coordinate complex refurbishment work involving multiple trades and stakeholders, and in which there was a considerable amount of altruism. Those projects have strengthened the company’s profile throughout the Raglan area, and reinforced its reputation as a specialist renovation business. With work continuing at Holy Name Catholic Parish and completion expected later this year, the project stands as another example of how The Reno Guys is helping preserve important community buildings, while giving them a renewed future. “If you want to take on a substantial renovation, I’d hope people think of us,” says Dan. “That’s what we’ve spent the last 13 years building towards.”
