Formerly known as FHB Construction, the business rebranded as New Key Projects last year as owners Asher Fernie-Harper and Donelle Murray sought to better represent how the company has evolved. While construction remains at the heart of the business, the addition of Donelle’s interior design expertise has transformed New Key Projects into a company capable of guiding clients from the earliest design ideas through to the final finishing touches. Their vision is to make the building process simpler, more cohesive and far less stressful for homeowners. Rather than coordinating multiple consultants, clients can work with one trusted team throughout the entire journey. “It is our dream to be able to offer a client a service that encompasses the design and build of both the interior and exterior of their home,” Donelle says. “Your home is a very personal space, and one that should reflect you and your own lifestyle needs.” Award-winning company Smith Construction has twice featured in Grand Designs New Zealand and is recognised as a leader in the creation of exceptional architectural homes in the Northland construction industry. Nick Smith moved his family and his business, Smith Construction Ltd out of Auckland to Waipu in Northland 19 years ago, then to Mangawhai two years later. Nick’s entrepreneurial instincts had led him to set up his own company straight out of his apprenticeship a few years earlier, and his move north coincided with the slowdown that came with the GFC (Global Financial Collapse). “I went back as a contractor to other builders for a while and got to know the area while we got established and settled. In 2010 I did my first full house build back under my own umbrella, and things grew from there,” says Nick. It was another few years before Smith Construction started the first high-end architectural build they’re now so well known for, Family-owned and operated, New Key Projects combines more than 20 years of industry experience with a hands-on approach that places communication and relationships at the centre of every project. The company specialises in residential construction, offering new builds, renovations, extensions, project management and interior design services. Whether clients are building a dream home from scratch, modernising an existing property or expanding to accommodate a growing family, the focus remains on delivering homes that suit each client’s lifestyle, budget and long-term needs. Asher leads the construction side of the business, supported by a team of six skilled builders, while Donelle manages projects and helps clients create interiors that are both stylish and functional. She can help clients select colours, materials, fixtures, finishes and layouts that bring harmony and character to every space. “Our goal is simple: to bring your project to life with minimal disruption, complete transparency and total peace of mind,” Asher says. Recent projects undertaken by New Key Projects include group building work for companies such as Signature Homes, Platinum Homes and Stonewood Homes Rodney, as well as a nine-home development in Warkworth. and it was during that build that Nick realised not only that it was where his passion lay, but also what he needed to do if he wanted to successfully make that passion his company’s focus, he says. “I realised I couldn’t be the most important person on the job. I needed to be off the tools and behind the scenes, working with experienced site managers who have the same vision as I do.” While Smith Construction has grown over the 10 years since and invested in some serious software and processes to support that growth, that shared vision continues to drive their success: a belief in doing what’s right, even when no-one’s watching, as they approach every project with care and accountability. Smith Construction’s specialty is architectural new builds. They do everything from the conceptual phase and managing the project through to completion and they all share a passion for architecture and the creativity that comes with it. “We love it when we get the freedom to be part of the design process which happens a lot.
