BUILDING SJR Builders is one of Hamilton’s oldest building companies, with a proven track record of excellence in providing high-quality building services to Hamilton and the greater Waikato region. This year, the SJR team is once again celebrating success as one of the country’s elite home builders. One of their latest projects is a stunning beach home that has won national recognition as a Top 100 Home in the 2025 Master Builder House of the Year Awards. With roots of excellence stretching back to 1972, SJR Builders has continued to raise the bar higher than ever under the leadership of builder Steve Ross. Today, SJR Builders is a multi-award winning company that’s pledged to ‘building perfection’, whether it’s a renovation, an architecturally designed new home, or a light commercial building. “We are often engaged to build high-end architectural homes,” says Steve, who takes a hands-on approach to running the business. “We like to work closely with both architect and client from a very early stage, so we can help refine the details, methods and materials. Once the building consent is finalised, it means we already know the plan and can get straight to work. It ensures the process is smooth and efficient and often benefits the clients by saving them costs too.” SJR Builders is celebrating outstanding success at this year’s Master Builder House of the Year Awards with ‘Bach to the Future’ at Cooks Beach. This gorgeous 231sqm beach home is a regional category winner and also won Regional Kitchen Excellence and Regional Gold Awards, as well as making selection in the national awards as a Top 100 Home. The judges praised the evident high degree of skill and craftmanship throughout. This award winner is close to Steve’s heart, as it’s his own property that he plans to share with friends and grown-up family. It features a timber-clad, monopitch roofed addition integrated into an existing house and comes with new open-plan communal space, bedroom suite, laundry and powder room on the ground floor, plus a mezzanine with a lounge and another bedroom with ensuite. A modern take on the existing bach, and with subtle use of Kiwiana, this sensational beach house showcases creative design, along with timber and stone materials in step with the coastal environment, and superb indoor-outdoor living. The generous layout includes three tiled bathrooms and two living spaces, one with a fireplace and stone hearth. “A panel of seasoned judges went through it and thoroughly assessed everything on-site. It is an honour to have had our workmanship and craft recognised on this special project.” Another beach house built by SJR in the same area — Ferry Landing — was one of the country’s most outstanding Master Build homes of 2023. Another Top 100 home, it won a Special Award, along with Regional Supreme, Regional Craftmanship, Gold and Regional Category awards. Remarkably, this standout home includes an underground tunnel that’s not only a linkway but also doubles as an underground wine cellar. High-end architectural homes can take 18 months or more to complete on-site. SJR Builders’ skilled team is dedicated to delivering consistently professional and high standard work.
