REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Building complex concrete structures requires specialist expertise and that’s exactly what Kalmar Concrete is bringing to Auckland’s luxury York House development, a six-storey apartment building above two basement levels underway in Parnell. The project offers a good example of what the company does, says Kalmar Concrete director Justin Savage. “We like to get involved at an early stage to offer our expertise,” he says. “Often, there are changes that can be made to optimise a project. We work on a best-forproject basis, collaborating closely with the main contractor and other stakeholders to achieve the best outcome.” Kalmar Concrete was originally established as Harbour Construction, a business owned by Justin that carried out extensive subcontracting work for Kalmar. In 2008, the founding directors of Kalmar purchased the business, making it a subsidiary of the Kalmar Group. Since then, it has grown into a highly regarded specialist contractor known for quality workmanship, technical precision and strong collaboration. It provides a full range of services from in-situ and post-tensioned concrete to shotcrete walls, grouting, reinforcing and precast installation. Justin says heavy investment has been made in Peri formwork systems from Germany, world-leading equipment that allows work to be carried out safely, efficiently and to the highest standard. “Kalmar Concrete offers more than just concrete placement. We want to provide a super-sub package,” says Justin. “That means we can deliver the entire structure, reinforcing, formwork, grouting, post-tensioning, as a onestop solution with a single point of contact for the main contractor.” Among its range of services, post-tensioned concrete is an area seeing growing demand. “There’s a lot more of that work happening now,” explains Justin. “I don’t believe there’s anyone else in the market who offers post-tensioning as part of a full in-house delivery the way we do.” The York House project showcases the company’s various capabilities. “A specialist contractor did the piling,” says Justin. “We built the concrete floors and foundations in the basement, then worked our way up, including the shotcrete walls around the perimeter, the suspended in-situ post-tension floors and the architectural precast walls.” He says that the project presented several challenges. “It’s a very architectural build, nothing is square and there are complex curves on the façade,” Justin explains. “There’s no laydown area on-site, so planning has been more stringent. We’ve been able to minimise what needs to be stored onsite by managing materials through our own plant and yard in Silverdale. “This project will show we have the ability to plan and deliver on very complex work.” Kalmar Concrete is also currently working on The Foundation – The Abbott Residences in Parnell, a $115 million retirement complex due for completion in 2026, alongside a range of other projects.
