30 | CMP Construction: Atlas HQ Takapuna T T Karen Phelps Atlas block a testament to concrete REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT CMP Construction NZ Ltd has taken out the commercial construction category at the 2025 New Zealand Chinese Building Industry Association awards for its work on the Atlas Concrete Headquarters in Takapuna, Auckland. Andrew Moore, CMP Construction’s commercial manager, says the $25 million project, which took 24 months to complete, is a showcase of concrete’s architectural potential. “This is a concrete building for a concrete supplier. Atlas’s brief was to highlight what can be achieved with concrete and to have people see what would normally not be seen. The building is a showpiece of what concrete is and can be,” he says. The three-storey headquarters integrates office spaces, a sales area, warehouse and a rooftop garden across 2,008 square metres of internal floor area. The building’s external façade features bespoke curved roofs, precast concrete fins and high-performance curtain wall glazing that creates a dynamic architectural presence. Andrew says that the project required a high level of craftsmanship to meet Atlas’s exacting standards. “We delivered the absolute highest standards in every aspect of construction including materials, workmanship, safety, durability and finishing,” explains Andrew. “Formwork was manufactured by joiners using CNC technology to provide the showpiece of concrete the client demanded.” He says the project presented significant technical challenges that required innovative solutions. “We encountered complex in-situ concrete design challenges, exposed surfaces throughout the building and architecturally demanding curved roofs. Some of the columns changed shape and direction and were three-dimensional. Air bubbles were deliberately left exposed, and concrete was used everywhere including the roof, soffits and furniture.” Sustainability formed a cornerstone of the project’s design philosophy. The building extensively uses Atlas’s GreenStone LCC low-carbon concrete, which incorporates fly ash and blast furnace slag to reduce carbon emissions, while enhancing durability. “Fly ash was used instead of concrete. Thicker slabs were used eliminating the need for reinforcing and crushed concrete was used instead of aggregate,” explains Andrew.
