| 59 CIVIL CONTRACTORS Almond Contractors The upgrade was undertaken for Auckland Council to restore and improve resilience in the aging and failing local wastewater network. CP Contractors managing director Carl Smith is proud to see long-time collaborator Almond Contractors named a inalist in the Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) Project Awards and receiving well-deserved recognition for the company and its owner Gary Almond. “He’s one of the hardest working people I know,” Carl says. “This nomination is a re lection of his genuine e ort and commitment to his business and his projects. I’ve been working with Gary since day one of CP Contractors, and we’ve got a strong work relationship that’s also a great friendship.” CP Contractors was established in 2016, with Carl going out on his own full-time in 2019. A certi ied plumber and drainlayer, he often works alongside Gary, a certi ied drainlayer and licensed building practitioner. Together they complement each other’s skill sets, combining plumbing and drainage expertise with larger-scale civil and earthworks capability. “With our powers combined we can take on a huge variety of di erent tasks,” Carl says. “Probably 60 to 70 percent of my work is drainage and earthworks, complemented by plumbing, and then contracting support for other local companies.” Operating across residential and light commercial projects throughout the region, CP Contractors recently partnered with Almond Contractors at Ātiu Creek Regional Park. The project involved upgrading stormwater and potable water systems to the park’s dwellings, including stormwater drainage, water iltration, and plumbing. “That’s where our skills complement each other perfectly,” Carl says. “Gary brings me in for the physical plumbing aspects, and I support the drainage side as well.” CP Contractors is committed to delivering quality outcomes and maintaining strong client relationships through clear communication and organisation. “I pride myself on doing what I say I’m going to do,” he says. “That has served me well to this day, and it’s why we get so much repeat work from our customers.” Alongside building his business, Carl is also focused on developing future tradespeople. His employee Joe Imrie, now in his third year of a plumbing and drainlaying apprenticeship, started with CP Contractors straight out of school. “My short-term goal is to get Joe fully quali ied in both trades,” Carl says. “Once he’s got his ticket, I’d like to bring on another apprentice and grow the business that way. I don’t have any desire to build a big company – this approach suits me better from a lifestyle point of view. I want to be hands-on, available for my kids, and still at the coalface.” He acknowledges that training apprentices can be a challenge. “It’s a big investment of time and money,” he says. “But I believe if I look after them, they’ll look after me. It’s about inding young people who share the same values and work ethic.” With Almond Contractors’ CCNZ award nomination shining a spotlight on their successful collaboration, Carl is pleased to celebrate not only the recognition of Almond’s hard work, but also the strength of the partnership between the two companies.
