Almond Contractors is celebrating recognition at the 2025 CCNZ Hynds Construction Awards, where the uckland-based drainage and infrastructure specialist has been named a finalist for its successful delivery of the Judges Bay Toilet Wastewater Pump Station Upgrade in Parnell. This project was undertaken for Auckland Council to restore and improve resilience in the aging and failing local wastewater network. The project had a strong community outcome, with the upgrade providing a permanent replacement for the damaged wastewater pipe and is expected to help remove the bay’s long-standing Safeswim black pin status, allowing the public to swim there once again. Project manager Kerwyn Lee says innovation and teamwork were key to delivering the upgrade on time and within budget. “The original design would have been difficult to build, so we worked with Council to adjust the methodology and make construction more efficient,” he says. “By using more off-the-shelf products and larger drilling augers, we minimised the construction footprint and simplified the build. We also treated all water before discharge, which was essential for environmental compliance.” The project came with strict deadlines. “We had to be out before November, so we started early and kept everything moving,” Kerwyn says. “It was a complex job with a lot of moving parts, but the team pulled together and delivered.” Founded by managing director, Gary Almond, 13 years ago, Almond Contractors has evolved from specialising in private drainage to becoming a trusted partner for Auckland Council, Watercare, and Tier 1 contractors including Downer, Fulton Hogan, and McConnell Dowell. Over the past six years, the company has steadily increased its public sector work, building a strong reputation in the drainage and infrastructure sector. Gary, described by his team as a “quiet achiever”, continues to work on the tools 70 to 80 percent of the time, alongside his responsibilities for pricing and quality assurance. “Gary has put in the hard yards over the years,” Kerwyn says. “This award nomination is the first time our work has been formally recognised, and it’s a big step forward for us.” With a team of 15 skilled staff and a network of reliable subcontractors, Almond Contractors has the flexibility to scale up or down depending on project needs. The company is now positioning itself to grow further, with aspirations to become a primary contractor for Watercare. Alongside project delivery, Almond Contractors places strong emphasis on values including respect, accountability, integrity, and sustainability. The business is committed to supporting local communities, minimising environmental impacts, and embedding sustainable practices such as its 2040 Zero Waste target. Safety is also paramount, with all plant and equipment meeting Tier 1 safety standards. For Gary and his team, the award nomination is recognition of their proven strengths and future potential. “A lot of people think we’re small, but we’ve got significant capability,” Kerwyn says. “This is just the start of us stepping forward and showing what we can do.” Health And Safety Made Easy, By Experts We’ve been helping kiwi businesses make Health and Safety easy for over 10 years.
