CB Civil & Drainage CIVIL A complex multi-discipline project delivered for Eke Panuku on Bomb Point Drive has seen CB Civil & Drainage named a finalist in the 2025 Civil Contractors New Zealand Awards. The Auckland-based civil contractor, which also operates across Northland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, completed the Hobsonville Wastewater Upgrade Works between May 2024 and June 2025. The scope included installing a 1km rising main by directional drilling, constructing a 32-metre-long palisade wall and placing what is believed to be New Zealand’s longest single-piece wastewater storage tank, a 13-metre structure transported and installed in one lift. “It brought together piling, drilling, deep excavation and marine outfall works into one cohesive, technically demanding job,” says project manager David Hopper. “The result is not just a working asset but a benchmark for how pump stations can be built in community-sensitive areas in a collaborative approach with all involved including some amazing subcontractors.” The site posed several challenges. Built beside a popular public park on a 20 percent gradient, unusual for pump stations, the project required custom engineering, careful sequencing and strict public-interface management. Despite severe weather events, including thunderstorms and surface flooding, the CB Civil team maintained programme momentum and met the client’s tight end-of-June deadline. A key factor in the project’s success was the strong, collaborative relationship developed with both Eke Panuku and Watercare. “From the start we worked closely with Eke Panuku as the client, and Watercare as the asset owner, to make sure the design and construction met long-term operational needs,” says David. “Both were actively involved in reviews and site visits, which meant decisions were made quickly and everyone was aligned on outcomes.” Innovation was another hallmark of the build. A modular Octabox trench system from Trenchmate replaced traditional sheet piling, delivering safer and more efficient temporary works while reducing material use and environmental impact. The design team also realigned sections of the rising main to avoid existing services, eliminated a five-metre-deep manhole, and redesigned the mechanically stabilised earth wall to accommodate site-won fill, saving cost and reducing waste. Environmental stewardship was equally central. Of 14 native trees initially marked for removal, seven were saved through design modifications, and vegetation cleared from site was donated to the local community. CB Civil partnered with the Kaipatiki Project to run a community replanting day at project closeout, restoring and enhancing the surrounding ecology. Quality and safety were other important focuses throughout delivery. Every element was finished to a high standard, with extra detailing undertaken purely for presentation. “We do what we say, and we say what we do,” says David. “Quality was a defining feature of this job.” CB Civil also replaced client-supplied pipework with higher-grade PVC at its own cost to ensure long-term performance. The company maintained a spotless safety record, supported by ISO 45001 systems and a MATES in Construction mental-health toolbox session for the crew. The completed works now provide critical wastewater capacity for the Hobsonville Airfields development and stand as an example of how civil infrastructure can be delivered innovatively, sustainably and in partnership with the community. “It’s a project we’re really proud of,” says David. “It shows what can be achieved when everyone, from client to contractor to community, pulls in the same direction.” SERVICES & PRODUCTS Industrial pumps & pump systems Valves & actuators Wastewater & stormwater solutions Chemical, oil & bitumen pumping Packaged pump stations Repairs, servicing & technical support CONTACT US 0800 786 774 CALL pumpandvalve.com LEARN MORE Supplying New Zealand with high-quality pumps, valves and packaged pump stations for every industry.
