Total Marine Group T T Hugh de Lacy “Dredging is an integral part of our services, and we hold various long-term contracts with local authorities to keep waterways and navigational channels clear.” MARINE From dredging and building marinas across New Zealand, to salvaging the 150-year-old schooner The Daring from a Northland beach, Takapuna-based Total Marine Group has proved itself to be at the forefront of marine construction in New Zealand. With bases in Auckland and Northland, Total Marine Group has the marine construction market covered by four wholly-owned subsidiaries that offer the complete mix of services, beginning with Total Marine Services which handles design, project management and construction. Total Floating Systems is the company that builds pontoons and floating structures, while Total Dredging does just that, and Total Engineering Services is in charge of steel fabrication and in-house maintenance support for the fleet. “We’ve structured the group so that we cover every aspect of the marine construction market – we’re a one-stop shop for such services,” says Tim Yeates, one of the founders of the group and a director along with Brent and June Shipman and their son Aaron. “We cover the whole of the country, and occasionally do projects offshore, of which one of the highest-profile jobs we’ve done was the construction of the floating bases for both Team New Zealand and their rival Luna Rosa for the Americas Cup in San Francisco. “We’ve built marinas all around the country, from Lyttelton to Whangamata, Tairua on the Coromandel, Stage Two of the Opua Marina in the Bay of Islands, Tutukaka Marina, and are currently constructing Okara Marina in Whangarei. “Dredging is an integral part of our services, and we hold various long-term contracts with local authorities to keep waterways and navigational channels clear. “The salvage of The Daring, after a storm in 2018 revealed where the wreck had been lying for a century and a half, saw us recover the remarkably well-preserved hull from where it was found on Te Oneone Rangatira beach, and transported to Mangawhai for restoration in 2021.” Total Marine Group operates no fewer than six tugboats manoeuvring its fleet of seven barges round the various construction sites. Two of the barges specialise in dredging while the rest are used as floating construction platforms for pile-driving and marine construction. Apart from his role at Total Marine Services, Tim chairs the not-for-profit R Tucker Thompson Trust that operates the 26m sail-training tall ship taking youth development groups on seven-day voyages around the Northland Coast. “We see Total Marine Group’s support of the trust as our way of introducing young people into the marine industry,” Tim says. Tim has spent his entire working life in the marine industry, while Total Marine Services founder Brent Shipman is an ex-Navy diver who spent eight years on the Auckland Harbour Board’s repair team before going on to form the Total Marine Group with Tim, with the aim being to provide an all-encompassing marine construction service to the industry. Steadily busy throughout what has been a tough couple of years for the New Zealand economy, Tim says that long-term contracts and a loyal customer base saw Total Marine Services through the tough times and “things are certainly on the improve now.” 09 402 7131 info@totalengineeringservices.co.nz 17 Baffin Street, Opua, Bay of Islands PROUD TO SUPPORT TOTAL MARINE GROUP www.totalengineeringservices.co.nz
