Director Nick Rowe brings over 25 years of experience in both residential and commercial architecture, with a strong focus on residential design. What distinguishes Nick Rowe Architecture is its deeply collaborative process and dedication to crafting high-end, bespoke designs. Nick Rowe Architecture has built a reputation for delivering exceptional designs that Architectural Designer Dylan Thomson jokes that he started his own business, Southern Draught – Architectural Solutions, because he “felt guilty about taking too much time off work to go kayaking”. Dylan was living in Wanaka and working for award-winning firm Sarah Scott Architecture when he founded Southern Draught – Architectural Solutions in 2014, to provide architectural solutions to see his clients’ visions through to completion. In 2016, he moved to Rotorua. Dylan’s specialist area is high-end, compact, eco-friendly, energy efficient, alpine-style builds, and although a lot of his work is centred around Rotorua, he still does a lot of work in Wanaka. He has experience in design and documentation in a wide variety of projects including public, commercial and high-end residential works, and a vast knowledge of building consent and resource consent requirements. With one of Dylan’s more recent projects, a home in Lynmore, Rotorua, he took the initial concept design by SGA Architects to the next level. Collaborating with SGA Architects, the builder and the client to complete a second concept, Dylan then made further adjustments and design changes. “Part of the design concept was to anchor the house in the hill, and use concrete features throughout the house,” he says. “The builder is a specialist concrete craftsman, who did a lot of the ‘figuring out’.” Dylan sought to bring the outside to the inside, using a lot of glass and in situ board work concrete and extending the materials between the spaces. “We wanted to bring a lot of light into the building,” he says. “The height of the building was limited, so the aim was to keep the height nice and low, while making the home feel voluminous and spacious.” align with clients’ budgets, with most projects successfully moving through to construction. This practical approach is one of the key reasons clients and contractors alike enjoy working with the team. Key projects over the last few years for Nick Rowe Architecture have been homes in Weiti Bay, Tindalls Bay, and Stanmore Bay. The Weiti Bay House was designed for a couple nearing retirement who wanted a space that brings family together across generations. Set on a large rural site with breathtaking views of Weiti Bay, the home spans two levels and comfortably accommodates four generations under one roof. The interior design for the Weiti Bay home was created by Trinity Interior Design, with construction completed by Ze Build. The result is a contemporary home that balances warmth and sophistication, featuring rich cabinetry, stone benchtops, and copper tapware. An open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area with exposed concrete floors flows seamlessly onto spacious decking, offering multiple outdoor entertaining spaces suited to different times of the day and changing weather conditions. Dylan says he believes in working in partnership with his clients to achieve a finished product they can be proud of. “I’m not the middleman between the builder and the client; we all work in together,” he says. “I work with a great core group of builders in Rotorua.” When designing a home, Dylan’s main goal is to illustrate the values and individuality of the client through design. “Each project is bespoken to our client’s needs and desires,” he says. “We strive to produce energy efficient, healthy buildings which are aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. “In the colder areas, we ensure that we build to passive house design principles. We celebrate modern aesthetics and healthy homes that work for the client and reflect their individuality.” The success of Southern Draught – Architectural Solutions has been acknowledged with several awards, including being named regional winner of the 2019 ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Award in the Residential Compact Home up to 150sqm for the Smith house, a collaboration with Studio 8a Design in Wanaka. They were also acknowledged as having designed New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Toilet at the 2023 Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards for the Okere Falls Wharepaku, commissioned by the Lake Rotoiti Scenic Reserve Board. Dylan was also an integral part of the design team on several award-winning homes while working for Sarah Scott Architecture. “We strive to produce energy efficient, healthy buildings which are aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.” John Creighton Owner / Director 021 325 313 or 03 388 3095 Paul Hickey Quantity Surveyor / Operations 021 818 754 or 03 388 3095 johncreightonbuilders.co.nz New Builds of High Architectural Standards Passive and Green Technologies Renovations Repairs Proud to support Nick Rowe Architecture PROUD TO SUPPORT Southern Draught Design & Insight Carpentry 66 Rakaunui Road, Taupo Phone: 07 386 8347 | apexwindows.co.nz CONCRETE POLISHING, RESIN & EPOXY FLOOR COATINGS, GRINDING & FLOOR PREPARATION M: 021 606 136 E: Cam@grindworks.co.nz www.grindworks.co.nz
