Since it was launched, the family-owned business has been a trusted name in Auckland’s residential renovation scene, and today, Eye For Detail (EFD) is led by Bernard’s son, Alex Carey, who officially took the reins as managing director in 2019. Although the company has evolved under his leadership with the introduction of modern systems and technology, its core purpose remains the same: to provide honest, expert construction services for families looking to renovate or build. “We work closely with our clients to ensure they are a part of the entire process from design through construction to completion as much as possible,” Alex says. Alex’s journey to running EFD wasn’t linear. Despite growing up on his Dad’s building sites and working for the business during school holidays, Bernard often told him: “Never become a builder.” So Alex initially took a different path – studying graphic design, landscaping in Canada, and spending four years as a lead deckhand on a superyacht. There, he refined his eye for finishing detail and developed a sharp sense of client service. Eventually, though, he returned home, completed his building apprenticeship and joined the business full-time. Today, he leads a team of 14, which includes five apprentices – reinforcing EFD’s role as not only a construction firm, but a training organisation as well. “We nurture our apprentices,” Alex says. “We have to treat them differently to a fully qualified employee, as they are working and studying at the same time. It is a big responsibility, but it’s also a way we can contribute to the industry and support our community.” Community involvement is a key part of the EFD ethos. Whether through sponsoring local schools financially, or by way of help on construction projects, the company believes in giving back to the neighbourhoods it helps shape. While based in Devonport, Eye For Detail serves clients Auckland-wide. Although they ‘dabble’ in light commercial construction, EFD specialises in residential renovations, which, as homeowners know, become a necessity over the lifetime of a home. Alex says whether the renovation is a major design upgrade for style or comfort, or to accommodate new family members, selecting the right builder to work with your family is the hardest, but most important decision you will have to make. “Choosing the wrong builder can result in serious issues with quality, budget, timeliness and safety,” he says. With EFD, each renovation is approached with the same level of thought and care, and Alex and his team work with clients to understand their goals, budgets and motivations. “If someone is renovating to sell, we’ll look at whether the work will actually add value,” Alex says. “There’s no point in doing a big renovation just for the next owner to rip it all out.” What sets EFD apart is not just the quality of its work, but its dedication to accountability. Mistakes are rare, but they are acknowledged and rectified. Client relationships are built on trust, and every decision is made with honesty and transparency. “The building work is the ‘easy’ part,” Alex says. “The most important thing is building a relationship of trust with our clients.
