Paterson Construction BUILDING Dave Paterson has been building for 20 years, operating as a contractor after completing his apprenticeship, then establishing the Coromandel-based Paterson Construction Limited in October 2013. For the last few years or so, Dave has been operating at a “comfortable size”, with himself and several contract builders, labourers and apprentices, which he says gives him plenty of scope to take on several projects at a time. “This is a size that works well for the current market. We’ve got the flexibility to work on several projects at once while maintaining our high standards,” he says.. “Typically, we can be working on two or three large builds plus half a dozen smaller jobs to keep the team busy. I have contacts with other builders, and we sometimes share the workload around, depending on how busy we are. It works well for us.” When it comes to undertaking large-scale renovations, Dave and his team know that experience in this type of construction goes a long way to ensuring these projects run smoothly. Paterson Construction also takes on light commercial work, along with just about any construction connected with the residential sector, both inside and out. That includes working on projects that really matter to the community, including the soonto-be-underway Cooks Beach Community Hall renovations. “We’ll be replacing the external walls and repitching the roof and building a large deck. It’s a nice project to be involved in, and means a lot to locals as the hall serves as a focal point for community activities.” Paterson Construction is proud to be part of Master Builders, Site Safe, BCITO and LBP Builders. Dave says his two apprentices are progressing very well under his guidance and that of his experienced team, along with BCITO, who he says do a good job structuring the learning modules. “One of the things that’s important to me is that those new to building get opportunities to experience all forms of construction work. Undertaking renovations, extensions, new builds and upgrades provides apprentices with really valuable experiences in problem-solving, which I think gives them a great grounding to become very competent builders in time.” Work extends all over the Coromandel region and Dave says it’s a great region to work in. “We get to work in some pretty wonderful locations and interesting situations and no two days are the same, for sure. “There is always something to do after work around here.” Asked what he sees as the core strengths of the company Dave says it’s having developed a strong systematic approach, where priority is given to clear communication and quality workmanship. “We set clear timelines and expectations on ourselves. “It’s our aim to ensure that each and every project we undertake for our clients results in a positive experience from start to finish.” Along with working in and on his building business, Dave and his partner Lucy, who is a lawyer, also own a cafe in Whitianga, called Coro Club, located at Whitianga Airport. “We have a wonderful team who help us run the cafe. “We are very proud to have won the award for the best airfield cafe 2024.
