T T Sue Russell Pask Construction BUILDING Hamish Pask, of North Auckland-based Pask Construction says since establishing his building company in 2019 there’s been a solid and very positive progression, and today, he leads a team of 10 carpenters. Having worked earlier in his building journey at Consortium Construction Christchurch, following completion of his apprenticeship in Invercargill, the opportunity came to move to Auckland to undertake a project for Consortium, which Hamish eventually saw as the chance to go out on his own. “I started with a couple of guys within the first week. Now with the team I’ve got, most are full-time, with one or two coming and going, depending on how busy we are. “We usually have between four and eight projects of various sizes on the go at any one time, so it works well in terms of keeping the team busy,” Hamish says. In the early days of the company forming, Hamish took on just about any work that was available, including projects for Kainga Ora and shop fit-outs, in the process building up a few contacts that would lead to further work. The bulk of work is in Central Auckland, the North Shore and West Auckland, though depending on the project, Hamish has taken on work further north. “My guys are quite spread around where they live, which is useful in terms of driving time across a good chunk of this area. “Now we’re at the size we are, I spend most of my time running around ensuring the sites have everything they need and the team can work efficiently.” Hamish says he’s enjoyed opportunities to train new apprentices to the trade, saying they need encouragement, and a good working culture to be part of. “They’re the future of our industry and in turn, they will hopefully one day support more to become qualified.” He is philosophical, too, about the nature of working in the industry, understanding its ups and downs in terms of demand given the situation with the economy, and factors influencing how much building work is available. “The last couple of years it hasn’t felt as though the industry is back to its usual level of activity; however, we’re fortunate to have some loyal clients, and 2025 is ticking along nicely for us.” Recently, the company completed some quite unique-looking high-end townhouses in Pt Chevellier. “I’ve completed quite a few townhouses, and these ones were very nicely designed, and with a lot of attention to detail in terms of specs.” Another project currently underway is what Hamish describes as a new home and minor dwelling on a hectare block overlooking native bush, just our of Waitoki. “The main house structure is SIP panels and the exterior cladding is a mix of steel cladding and cedar. “It’s been a project that has been in the pipeline for a couple of years, so it’s exciting to see it starting to take shape.” Hamish says he’s pleased with the variety of work that crosses his desk, and what the business has achieved since he established it just a few years ago. “It was definitely the right decision for me to step out on my own when I moved up here. “We’re a nice manageable size, so I can still keep an eye on everything.
