REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Mitchell Construction: St Johns Waihi Waihī Hato Hone St John’s team of staff, volunteers and emergency responders are looking forward to moving into their new, purpose-built ambulance station now that construction work is almost finished on site. Completion is expected by the end of June. Plans to replace Waihī’s previous station began some time ago, when it became clear the old station was no longer fit for purpose. It was then demolished to make way for a modern new station, with ambulance operations moving to temporary premises in the meantime. Waihī locals have been tremendously supportive of the project, contributing generously to various community fundraising initiatives. Some of the funds raised by last year’s Hato Hone St John Light the Way annual appeal also went to the town’s new ambulance station. Mitchell Construction has led this vital rebuild project, with station design by award-winning architect, Andrew McNally of APG Architects. Brad Mitchell, who managed all aspects of the build for Mitchell Construction, from pricing to procurement, says the lead-up to construction was slowed by geotechnical issues and the discovery of ground contamination that needed to be cleared and remediated. A high water table also had to be addressed before building could start. “Once we got out of the ground, there were no problems at all. This has been a long time coming for the local St John’s team, so they’ve been really stoked to see the building progress on site.” Purpose-designed-and-built to house three ambulances and a community health shuttle, the new station also includes workstations, a communications office, kitchen, lounge and dining areas, staff showers and toilet facilities. It is poised to play a vital role in the community as a safe and reliable base of operations for staff, volunteers and emergency responders, as well as the Waihī Hato Hone St John area committee. Brad has regularly travelled to Waihī throughout the build to liaise with the team on-site and check on progress. “I organise the deliveries and people on-site to make sure the right number are there and that the subcontractors turn up when needed. Everyone worked hard to make up for the delays at the start and hit the mark. We know how important this is for the community.” Mitchell Construction is family owned and operated, working across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. As digging commenced, something unexpected was found – an old rubbish dump. “It was a tricky site with contaminated material that had to be removed and transported to an appropriate disposal site. Accessing the dump was difficult and there was lots of water flowing through that had to be managed. Once we’d dug out the dump site, we then had to build it back up with engineered fill from a local quarry.” Jason says the strong partnership with Mitchell Construction once again proved invaluable in this project. “We work on trust and mutual respect and try to make things happen together. If there’s an issue, we do our best to navigate that and keep the client informed.
