38 | Peka Industrial Park T T Kim Newth Streamlined logistics a strong point The vision is to create a hub for competitive production and growth that will foster prosperity and wellbeing for local people and businesses. DEVELOPMENT It is now only a matter of weeks before the first stage of Rotorua’s exciting new industrial development, Peka Industrial Park, is open and ready to go, with a new entranceway, giving full access to the park’s stage 1 sites, due to be completed by the second week of August. “For our first tenants, we’re working on a plan to give them earlier access because they can’t wait to get started,” says development manager Mike Beattie. Located on Rotorua’s southern boundary, and tailored to support heavy industries, Peka Industrial Park is ideally located by key transport routes at the junction of SH5 and SH30. Spanning 140 hectares in total, the park’s first development phase encompasses 12 hectares. With its easy connections to main centres like Tauranga, Hamilton and Taupō, it offers streamlined logistics for manufacturing, warehousing and distribution. The vision is to create a hub for competitive production and growth that will foster prosperity and wellbeing for local people and businesses. After years of hard work by Peka Trust, in conjunction with Rotorua Lakes Council, RotoruaNZ and Waka Kotaki, that vision is now fast coming to life. “It is very exciting for the trust. They have learned an awful lot along the way and are on a strong growth path. When people come here now, they’re so impressed with that they see,” says Mike. Among the first confirmed tenants is MixUp Concrete Rotorua Ltd, which is planning a purpose-built facility at the park to produce low-carbon concrete. This dovetails nicely with the park’s own sustainability values. “We have one other confirmed tenant and two more that we’re working with,” says Mike. “There is also a possible fifth tenant that’s just come through. It’s a good level of interest so far. We anticipate seeing active construction on two or three sites by the end of this year.” Site sizes at Peka Industrial Park range between 4000sqm and one hectare, with the average site being around 5000sqm. Most sites currently available for lease are between 5000sqm and 7000sqm, ideal for industries needing space for buildings, plant and drop-off/pick-up areas. An added advantage for industrial businesses choosing Peka Industrial Estate is that the consenting environment is more relaxed, enabling more flexible operating hours and more reasonable noise constraints. All sites are level and grassed, and fully serviced with sewer, stormwater, fibre and power connections.Mike says it is no exaggeration to describe this development as a park. As an ahu whenua trust development, there’s a deep commitment to serving as kaitiaki (guardians) of the whenua, protecting and nurturing the land and waterways. “There are a lot of green spaces being replanted,” says Mike. “Peka Trust has a wetland restoration plan going forward. “There will be paths created going through it, so people can bike or walk through or enjoy their lunch sitting outside. “It’s almost like each stage will be an island in a sea of green. The trust wants to leave a lasting heritage for their mokopuna.” He says that from a recreational perspective, Peka Industrial Estate’s close proximity to Whakarewarewa Mountain Bike Park, Mountain Bike Rotorua, the Rotorua BMX Club and Secret Spot Hot Tubs Rotorua is another huge win for future business owners and their employees. Rotorua town centre is also only two kilometres down the road. With finishing touches now nearing completion on stage 1, masterplanning is underway to upgrade and transform an existing truck stop near the park’s front entrance off SH5, as well as an associated small industrial area, to bring it up to standard with the rest of the park. Looking further ahead, development of the park’s second stage (7ha) is planned for August 2027, with stage 3 expected three years later.
