The Tooth Fairy Dental Clinic in Tauranga was a high-profile build that required the company to draw on every skill in its considerable toolkit. “We’re predominantly a residential builder, and this was the biggest commercial project done by Totara Construction,” says Matt Saathof, the company’s owner and director. “For a company whose identity is so closely tied to residential excellence the recognition signals that our capabilities extend well beyond that. “It really showcased our skillset, our skill in construction methodology and management, and our efficiency. It was completed on time and on budget.” The project, delivered for property owner Toi Moana Property and designed by Carnachan Architecture, sits on a high-profile site and serves a well-known business, raising the stakes considerably. The build required deep 1,800mm foundations to be constructed in sandy ground, which Matt says was a significant technical challenge that demanded precise engineering from the outset. From there, Totara Construction completed the full structure, fit-out, carpark and landscaping as well as managing the installation of specialised dental equipment. The interior reflects the careful attention to detail the company has built its reputation on. Solid oak doors, timber screens, and sleek glass cavity sliders combine warmth and functionality in what might otherwise be a purely clinical environment. The result is a space that feels considered rather than merely completed. Matt says that coordination was central to the project’s success. Large volumes of services required careful sequencing and a thorough understanding of how each element needed to be installed, a complexity that he says the team handled without drama. “We deliver a high-quality product efficiently which is so important as efficiency can be where many projects fall down. Efficient building is what we excel at and this project was no different,” says Matt. Matt brings more than 18 years of industry experience to every project, including a Double Diploma in Construction Management and Quantity Surveying. He was named Apprentice of the Year in his region and finished second in the national competition, before rising through the ranks to foreman and project manager. He has since delivered work ranging from multi-million-dollar homes to a missionary complex in Papua New Guinea and an airport upgrade in Fiji.
