When we say we’re one big family, we really are.” A strong sense of whānau and deeply embedded Māori values are shaping the way JC Civil Construction Ltd operates, setting it apart in the civil construction sector. Founded by managing director John Gisborne, the company was built on more than two decades of industry experience, but also on a desire to do things differently. That difference is most evident in its culture, where multiple generations of the same families work side by side. “It’s not just something we say,” says general manager Jason Stevenson. “We’ve got dads and sons, nieces and nephews working here. When we say we’re one big family, we really are.” That multi-generational structure extends from the leadership, with John’s father and son working in the business, reinforcing a sense of unity and shared responsibility. It is a dynamic that Jason believes strengthens both morale and performance on-site. “We think it provides a better team,” he says. “Everyone digs in for each other and we all look out for one another. We all work together as one. We’re not a dysfunctional family, we’re a functional family,” he adds with a laugh. Central to this approach are traditional Māori values, such as whakawhanaungatanga, the process of building relationships, and kaitiakitanga, the responsibility of caring for people and the environment. Jason says these principles are not treated as abstract ideas, but as practical guides for daily operations. “These values are critical,” he says Jason. “You take care of your people and the environment, and in turn it takes care of you.” That philosophy extends into the company’s approach to health, safety and sustainability with SiteWise and Tōtika certifications. It also embraces reusing and recycling materials wherever possible. The company’s project portfolio reflects both its capability and its community connections. It has recently completed the Kerepēhi Raw Water Upgrade project for Hauraki District Council, playing a key role in the connection between the new reservoirs and the new bulk water main, as well as installation of the bulk water main. It has also delivered multiple pavement rehabilitation projects for Matamata-Piako District Council, and further storm resilience work is underway with Thames-Coromandel District Council. One project in particular stands out for its cultural significance. “As a Māori-owned business, being involved in the Waikato-Tainui papakāinga development at Hopuhopu is something we’re really proud of,” says Jason. “We’ve been heavily involved in the three waters aspect of that project.” Known for stepping up to complex challenges, the company offers end-to-end civil solutions, from planning and design through to construction and completion. It works closely with clients to streamline projects, reduce reliance on multiple subcontractors, and deliver clear, practical outcomes. “We don’t just turn up,” says Jason. “We work alongside our clients, offering smarter solutions through honest hard graft and no-nonsense teamwork.” While still a relatively young company, it employs 35 staff and combines fresh energy with seasoned expertise, bringing together a team that knows the work intimately and takes pride in doing it well.
