Built on fast response, Truck Track & Marine (TTM) has grown from a oneman mobile heavy- diesel service business into a multi-sector operation based in Warkworth. Owner-operator Zane Marshall started the company in 2013, initially contracting to workshops before building a client base of his own and working independently from a home workshop. “I started off mainly on-site, just doing diesel mechanical work, and slowly built up a few customers of my own until it became fulltime,” he says. That early model expanded quickly, with multiple staff operating out of the home yard before the move, late 2021, into a dedicated industrial site at Hudson Road, improving both visibility and workflow. Today, the business employs five mechanics alongside office support, delivering servicing, repairs and diagnostics across trucks, earthmoving equipment, forestry machinery and marine diesel engines. “Being in town made a big difference, especially for the truck side of things. Location really helped the growth of the business identity in the local community,” says Zane. A significant portion of the workload is driven by breakdown response, where urgency and turnaround are critical for clients operating in high-pressure sectors. “Quite often, we’re leaving within 20 minutes of a call. For a lot of our clients, time is money, so getting them going again as quickly as possible is everything.” That responsiveness is backed by three dedicated service trucks, enabling the team to operate across a wide geographic area, including remote forestry sites and coastal ports. The business also carries out hydraulic diagnostics and hose repairs on-site, supported by a mobile hose trailer that allows full fabrication in the field, reducing downtime for machinery and vessels. “You might not have everything you need out there, so you’ve got to be able to think on your feet and get the job done properly.” Zane’s background has shaped a strong marine component, with the company maintaining commercial fishing vessels and pleasure boats, and undertaking work on ships throughout the Pacific Islands. This spread of work provides a level of stability, with different industries picking up at different times of the year. “If one side slows down, something else usually keeps us busy. That range of work has been important for us.” The Warkworth workshop and mobile hydraulics trailer underpins that capability, equipped with heavy-duty machinery, diagnostic systems, welding and fabrication capacity to support engine rebuilds, structural repairs and ongoing servicing. Financial manager, Bridgette Moore, says as the business has grown, attention has shifted beyond tools and turnaround to how the operation is managed behind the scenes. “We’ve brought Angela into the business as a manager so we can start modernising our systems and get everything talking to each other.” Angela Dalton’s recent appointment marks a move to formalise processes around scheduling, inventory, financial tracking, purchasing and invoicing, replacing manual systems that developed during the company’s early growth. “And now, because we are so much bigger than what we were, we’re working on making the business side match the manual side,” says Bridgette. Updating the systems will also help with job scheduling and projection of workflow throughout the year, looking at quieter times, filling gaps and improving overall forecasting. The focus is on improving efficiency and creating a structure that supports further expansion, enabling the workshop team to continue delivering quality, time-critical service, Bridgette says.
