T T Virginia Wright Chilltech was established by Richard Crum and Warwick Piggot in Whangārei in 1997 as a refrigeration and air conditioning business. It has since grown to become a market leader in HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Cooling) solutions for both domestic and commercial environments. Today it has premises in Northland, Mangawhai and Auckland and employs close to 70 staff servicing customers and sites throughout the upper North Island. While the demand for refrigeration has remained relatively stable over the years the air-conditioning market continues to grow. With nearly three decades of experience producing complex HVAC solutions Chilltech has a well-established record of excellence in mechanical design and installation, and they back everything up with their highly experienced service and maintenance crews. “Over the years as technology has changed and air-conditioning has become a more prevalent source of heating and cooling, the company has developed with it,” says Head of Sales and Business Development, Aaron Conaghan. Always working at the leading edge of the HVAC market Chilltech pairs deep technical expertise with the latest advancements in technology. Today that means a strong focus on energy efficiency and electrification while working closely with architects and construction contractors to ensure every project is seamlessly delivered to the highest standard. Historically HVAC system design and capability have focused on managing maximum use: the maximum number of people who will be in a building, the maximum heat-load the building will see and so on, but as technology has advanced so have the design efficiencies that can be built into the system, Aaron says. “Before, systems used a lot of energy because they were based on maximum energy use. But a system which can measure actual occupancy, whether it’s through a movement sensor or CO2 and Carbon Monoxide sensors, can give the amount of ventilation and heating and cooling that you actually need for the number of people present in the building rather than a possible maximum. You can do the same for lights so they switch on and off automatically, and automatic blinds can track the sun to bring shade to the building and stop the air-conditioning having to overcome the heat of the sun.” Designing systems to make the most of whatever the latest developments in technology have to offer for energy efficiency is standard practice for Chilltech and dovetails with their expertise in renewable on-site energy generation using photo-voltaic solar panels. It’s particularly practical for commercial buildings which are generally occupied during the day. “We can tie all of that real time data into our intelligent controls package, so that the air-conditioning and ventilation systems are adjusting the amount of energy they use according to real-time needs, and they’re using power when it’s available from the sun to further reduce energy usage costs,” says Aaron. Unlike many companies which specialise in either design or installation Chilltech have grown the capability to do both with all the savings that brings with it.
