Jeff Emerson’s association with Hamilton-based engineering company Installation & Piping Services extends back to about 2007, initially as a contractor and sole trader, during which he began to supervise projects. So when the opportunity came along in 2021 to buy the business, he and business partner Stefan Parkinson decided this was a good time to steer their own ship and develop the business on. “Though it was around the COVID time, business was good and things picked up, particularly servicing the dairy sector,” Jeff says. The company is based in Te Rapa, in one of Hamilton’s industrial precincts and in Rolleston in Canterbury. Its primary activity is around servicing the installation of sites connected with the food and beverage industries, and today the company engages a team of about 50 engineers and fitters. The Rolleston workshop began back in 2016 and subsequently closed when business dropped; however, Jeff says there’s been a demand for the workshop to reopen and currently he goes down to Rolleston about once a month to fulfil demand. “We’re primarily a site-based business with teams heading out in all sorts of directions. Dairy projects can go right throughout the year; however, there is a greater demand for our services through the winter months, as is to be expected, when the cows have dried off.” Other sites include pet food factories and cheese plants, where the crew undertakes routine maintenance of plant along with delivering new infrastructure. Jeff and business partner Stefan Parkinson are intent on seeing the business grow and acknowledge within a competitive sector they are ticking over nicely. “Along with servicing the dairy sector we have our foot firmly in the door in the water-treatment sector. We have about twenty employees and the balance are contractors, so we have the flexibility to cope with both busy and the quieter times.” Asked how his day is taken up, Jeff says both he and Stefan are engaged in a lot of pricing work. That, and organising the teams along with Operations Manager, Ed Hewer, keeps management busy. “We have people all over New Zealand and though we recently haven’t done much work overseas I’ve been in South America, Australia and Asia on projects.” Having such a long track-record servicing the food and beverage industry has positioned Installation and Piping Services Ltd well. The business focuses closely on the setup and engineering of stainless process piping, sanitary food-grade systems, manufacture and installation of specialised industrial processing equipment along with general structural metal fabrications for building projects. Jeff says a key reason why the business has succeeded through some relatively tough economic conditions is the quality of the team and the culture of the business. “We’ve got guys who have been with us from the start and they feel a strong connection to the business and its success. Everyone pulls in and helps — a real team effort, coupled with great skills and experience.” When the former owner decided to retire, Jeff says a priority was to establish good policies, update Health and Safety, and ensure the systems were in place to cope with an increase in demand. “Doing this groundwork in the early days of taking over really paid off. We could see the untapped potential in the business, given the quality of the team, and the reputation it has established today links directly to its capabilities demonstrated in each and every project we take on.”
