One of the Bay of Plenty’s most significant flood protection projects is helping strengthen the region’s resilience to extreme weather, and behind the scenes Control Tech has played a critical role in ensuring the infrastructure performs when communities need it most. The Bay of Plenty-based electrical and automation specialist was responsible for the design and build of the electrical and automation systems for the Rangitāiki Spillway Project. The project reflects growing investment in flood resilience and critical infrastructure throughout New Zealand, an area where Control Tech has established a strong reputation over more than 20 years. Working alongside local government organisations throughout the Bay of Plenty and Waikato, the company helps infrastructure operators make faster, smarter decisions through specialist electrical, automation, and remote-monitoring solutions. Control Tech technical director, Karam De Lacey, says much of the company’s success has been built on longstanding relationships and its ability to provide complete end-to-end solutions. “We are a solutions provider,” he says. “Councils bring us complex challenges and we enjoy finding practical ways to solve them. We design, build, install, commission, maintain, and service everything ourselves, and we cover the entire life cycle of an asset, which is quite unique in our industry.” Control Tech’s expertise spans flood protection, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure, drinking-water assets, pump stations, telemetry systems, and environmental monitoring networks. As investment in flood resilience, water infrastructure and environmental monitoring continues across New Zealand, and weather events become more frequent and severe, Control Tech expects demand for integrated automation and remote-monitoring solutions to keep growing. “The need for reliable infrastructure and real-time information has never been greater,” says Karam. “Our role is making sure the systems behind that infrastructure are ready to perform whenever they’re needed.” Control Tech’s systems provide reliable real-time visibility of pump station performance, river levels, rainfall accumulation and environmental conditions, and its remote-monitoring platform, RICADO, allows operators to monitor critical infrastructure assets from anywhere. For the Rangitāiki Spillway Project, Control Tech was engaged to design and build the electrical and automation systems that operate the spillway’s three radial gates. The gates play a critical role in managing flood flows during major weather events, making reliability and resilience central to the project’s design. Karam says the project presented unique engineering challenges, because the gates may remain inactive for long periods before being called upon during a significant flood event. “We had to design a system with multiple layers of redundancy and automated testing capability, so operators can have confidence the gates will perform exactly as intended, even after extended periods of inactivity,” he says. Control Tech’s in-house capabilities were a significant advantage throughout the project. The company designs and manufactures its own control panels and switchboards, allowing systems to be customised to individual site requirements, while maintaining quality and reliability. The company also provides 24/7 call-out support and proactive monitoring of critical infrastructure assets, particularly during severe weather events. Any issues can be diagnosed and resolved remotely, minimising downtime and helping ensure assets remain operational when they are needed most.
