T T Anne Boswell For Prime Plumbing owner, Mike Sando, success has never been about making the most noise. Instead, it comes down to a simple philosophy: keep your head down, work hard, and focus on doing the job right. That approach has helped the Papamoa-based plumbing business build a loyal client base and navigate some of the toughest conditions the construction industry has faced in recent years. Prime Plumbing was first established in 2001 by founder Brian Owen. When Brian expressed an interest in retiring, Mike – who was working as a contractor for Brian – saw an opportunity to take over the business and build something of his own. He gradually purchased the company over a five-year period, taking full ownership in 2018. Today, Prime Plumbing employs five staff and services a broad range of clients across the Tauranga region. While most of its work is local, the team does occasionally travel a little further afield to carry out insurance work for existing clients. Prime Plumbing’s services include everything from emergency repairs and 24/7 callouts for urgent leaks or blockages, through to drain unblocking, gas-fitting services, hot water systems and repairs, new-build plumbing services, and plumbing renovations and upgrades. The team works closely with homeowners to ensure plumbing systems are efficient, reliable and tailored to the project. The company’s bread-and-butter work centres on property management maintenance and renovations, although it also undertakes light commercial projects and the occasional new build. Its client list ranges from major property management companies, such as Ray White and Eves Realty, through to respected builders, such as Design Builders. But Mike believes that technical skills are only part of what makes a great plumber: just as important is how his staff members conduct themselves when entering customers’ homes. “We are going into people’s homes, so we want to be professional, polite and have empathy,” he says. “Our goal is for every staff member to not only become the best plumber they can be, but also the best person they can be.” As a certified Master Plumber and Gasfitter, Mike regularly uses the Master Plumbers’ technical resources and HR support, and values the opportunity to connect with fellow business owners. And with trusted subcontractors, such as Above and Beyond Builders and Hire A Hubby Papamoa complementing its services, Prime Plumbing continues to focus on what it does best. Like many businesses in the construction sector, Prime Plumbing faced significant challenges with workflow during 2025. Mike describes the year as particularly difficult, but says the company emerged stronger by sticking to its values and maintaining trusted relationships with clients and industry partners. “Despite 2025 being a disaster, we survived,” he says. Today, workflow is strong, reflecting the wider importance of the plumbing profession. “As plumbers, we take great pride in being part of a profession that plays a crucial role in protecting public health,” Mike says. “From providing clean, drinkable water to ensuring hot water for our showers and preventing the spread of diseases, we’re on the frontlines, making sure homes and communities stay safe. We’re just a business that likes to keep its head down.”
