Set within the Lockerbie Estate master-planned development, the village welcomed its first residents four years ago and continues to expand its housing and facilities as demand for its model of retirement living grows. The Lodge facilities building opened around 18 months ago. It includes a swimming pool, gymnasium, library, theatre, residents’ lounge, craft room, bar area and outdoor entertaining spaces. As part of Lockerbie Village’s next phase, Christian Healthcare Trust (CHT) has bought land adjacent to the village and plans to deliver an aged care facility. The rest home is expected to be completed in around two years and will provide additional continuity of care for residents as they age. Kathryn says there are several key things that set Lockerbie Village apart. As Lockerbie Village is independently and 100 per cent New Zealand owned, decision-makers are closely connected to the community, which she says allows for more oversight and responsiveness to residents’ needs. The directors and owners know every person in the village giving residents a more personal contact with the people making the decisions,” she says. Another key feature that sets the village apart is its fixed-fee model, which Kathryn says provides long-term certainty for residents at a time when many retirement living costs continue to rise elsewhere. T T to page 92 “Most retirement village fees go up each year,” says Kathryn. “Our fixed-fee model gives residents certainty. The fees include most outside maintenance of the home, including rates and building insurance, cleaning of outside windows, a St John alarm installed in the home, and use of the village facilities and some activities among other things.” Community is another defining feature and central to the village design, with Lockerbie Village forming part of the wider Lockerbie Estate subdivision. Kathryn says this integration supports multi-generational living, with residents often living alongside children and grandchildren in the surrounding neighbourhood.
