Sited on a narrow point of land near Russell the new holiday home and boatshed could not be any closer to the water. Over the past 20 years since founding Going Architectural, Milton Going and his team have designed many landmark homes, spanning unique sites from the Hibiscus Coast/Auckland to the Bay of Islands and Hawke’s Bay. Two recent projects, both contemporary holiday homes, are true seaside showstoppers. The first is sited on a narrow point of land jutting out into the sea at Okiato, south of Russell, where a tired old boatshed used to stand. You can still see a boatshed there today, but this upgraded new one is modern, weathertight and thoroughly shipshape. A short flight of steps leads up from the boatshed to an adjacent timber deck providing ample outdoor living space for a gorgeous new holiday home. It could not be any closer to the waterline: from the home’s open plan living/kitchen/ dining area, there are sensational sea views on either side and easy access to the deck through sliders. The main bedroom with ensuite and walk in robe is tucked in between the living space and boatshed, while a two-storey wing with more bedrooms, screened by greenery, is at the other end of the home. Rooflines are pleasingly pitched throughout, creating a contrast of forms. The careful design ensures this home does not clash with its sea setting. Passing yachties would barely notice it. Boatshed and home share a toned down grey and aged timber look and a robust palette of shiplap cladding and metal longrun, (the latter used for both roofing and vertical cladding). “The original design was quite different as the client and his partner started out wanting the boatshed to be part of the house,” says Milton. “It wasn’t until we were going through the consent process that he had a big change of mind and decided that he’d prefer to separate the boatshed and house. It actually made everything much easier and paved the way to a better end result.” Years in the making, this project required many steps to get it over the line such as environmental remediation work (in connection with the old boatshed) and the creation of a functional, unobtrusive effluent system. The shed itself, slightly scaled down compared to the original, has been beautifully designed to accommodate a classic wooden boat in pristine condition. “It has its own winch system to lift this boat up from and down to the water. It is a pretty cool, unique home and shed; all involved are very happy with the outcome.” A W Grierson Builders delivered the design on-site, with the home and boatshed completed in 2023. As Milton observes, Andy Grierson and his team are experienced building specialists in the architectural new home market in the Paihia and Russell area. “They started with the boatshed first and did a very good job.” Across the water from Okiato another unique Going Architectural project is taking shape. This is a holiday home project too, but has a different look and style, and includes the transformation of an existing boatyard with upgrades to the existing buildings and private wharf. Having run a private commercial boatyard at Opua for some years, the client had always dreamed of building a house there too. Again, it has been a long journey to develop the vision and gain consent for this amazing design and build by the water. “In the instance the American client wanted Cape Cod style architecture and the design has evolved to achieve that distinctive look.” The new home is two-level with a guest loft bedroom in the roof space. The mid-level comprises the main bedroom plus open plan kitchen/dining/living flowing to wraparound decking. Underneath is a big storage garage and workshop. The spacious boatyard building also includes a workshop, plus kitchenette, winch house and double garage. “The boatyard building has been done, along with a brand new wharf – it is great to see this dream now coming to reality too.” Builders of Quality Homes Mob 027 496 7458 A/h 09 402 8159 awgriersonbuilders@xtra.co.nz Contact Andy on: Enhance your outdoor lifestyle and maximise your space, with opening louvre roof systems, glass & aluminium balustrades and pool fencing from Outdoor Edge. 0800 459 192 info@outdooredge.co.nz www.outdooredge.co.nz
