Bonus Contractors, shaping the Bay of Islands since 2007 For experienced roading and earthworks contractor Ross Norman, jobs often start when the phone rings. Usually, it’s someone wanting his opinion, for example on how to manage access for a newly purchased property. Invariably, once they hear his sound advice, they ask if he can do the job for them. Since establishing Bay of Islands contracting business Bonus Contractors in 2007, Ross has built a leading reputation in the region as a reliable earthworks specialist, providing roading and access way services, site preparation and levelling as well as drainage piping and culverts. “What I have noticed is that if you do the job right, irst time, then people will come back to you again and again. A three-hour job often leads to an enduring working relationship over many years.” Ross played a key role in shaping a recent standout project, in conjunction with Going Architectural and A W Grierson Builders involving the design and build of a uniquely stunning boatshed and home on a waterside site at Okiato, Russell. “My role was three-fold: irstly, forming an access driveway to the site. We then had to remove an old boatshed, including removing the old poles that it was sitting on. Getting it all out was quite challenging. The third part was getting a retaining wall in place before the building went up. There was an old seawall there that we encased in concrete blocks. I worked closely with another local expert [John Gardiner] on the design – it looks just like a real rock face.” Being part of this project was a pleasure for Ross, who has done a lot of work with Andy Grierson before and describes him as an excellent builder. The shaping of the driveway and its placement also opened up design opportunities for Going Architectural. “With it being in the public eye by the sea, we were half expecting some negative feedback from the locals but there were no problems like that at all. Everything came together extremely well – the end result couldn’t be better.” Ross and wife Debs live in Paroa Bay, also Bonus Contractors’ base of operations. The versatile leet includes three 13-tonne diggers, a 6-tonne digger and another smaller one. Ross also has a quarry at Elliot Bay on the East Coast, used to make metal for roading. He recently purchased a new truck for hauling road chip for sealing. Bonus Contractors is currently working across the region, with one of the bigger projects involving landscaping work for a large new subdivision at Omarino, near Rawhiti.
