BUILDING Home of Origin Auckland-based Home of Origin is a boutique residential construction company dedicated to building thoughtfully crafted, modern character homes, and this year, founders Debbie Gasson and John Beanland are proudly celebrating 25 years in business. Working on older homes in Auckland’s inner suburbs as a young carpentry apprentice was an influential experience for John, who continues to draw inspiration from the California Bungalow look that first rose to prominence in New Zealand more than a century ago. “In my apprenticeship, I learned traditional hand skills and carpentry, as the business I worked for specialised in restoring old bungalows and villas in suburbs including Mt Eden, Epsom and Parnell,” says John. “It was a good grounding, and I still bring that character to the new houses we build today. What I enjoy most is applying traditional craftsmanship to modern building techniques, creating brand-new homes that look like they could have been designed in 1903.” The modern bungalow style may look retro, but it comes with built-in functionality and comfort – everything from video door bells to the latest insulation. Each house built by Home of Origin is unique, with designs by Lee Philips, Masterplan Architectural Ltd. Established in 2001, Home of Origin’s first homes were constructed in the Dannemora area of Botany in South Auckland. The focus later switched to residential new builds in the Millwater subdivision near Orewa. John says a strong working relationship forged with Fulton Hogan in their early years helped establish a steady and sustainable pipeline of work. In 2026, Home of Origin is actively building in Milldale, neighbouring Millwater. Home of Origin has recently finished a stunning character home in Milldale that has already sold. With a gable-end frontage, handcrafted fretwork and board-and-batten exterior finished in the traditional way, this spacious family home is a real standout in the street. The layout includes four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms (including double showers), separate lounge, family and dining room, a beautifully appointed kitchen with large walk-in pantry, separate laundry, and double garage. Indoor living flows seamlessly to kwila decks and landscaped garden. Building in the California Bungalow style is inevitably more complicated and time- consuming than a standard build, but John says there is real satisfaction in building a character home with care and craft. “We build for the joy and passion of it, and we’re committed to maintaining a high standard, which naturally commands a premium.” Debbie and John bring complementary skills to their business, with Debbie managing administration and John overseeing handson logistics day to day. Their team includes head carpenter, Robert, and two apprentices, Charlie and Kate. They are supported by a network of trusted suppliers and carefully selected subcontractors. “We’re a boutique house-building company, so our focus is on building quality rather than volume.” Flooring Kiwis Since 1985 Proudly Supporting Home of Origin Your Trusted Source For Quality Flooring & Carpet In Auckland BOOK A F R E E MEAS UR E johnjarviscarpets.co.nz 09 634 6453 Cnr Church St | Maurice Rd, Penrose Phone Darcy 021 482 308 or Email: darcywills@xtra.co.nz DNE Decorators Proudly Supporting Home of Origin • Commercial and residential painting services • Interior and exterior painting • Wallpapering services • Plastering services dnedecorators@yahoo.com
