110 | Tauranga Boys College: Form NZ T T Kelly Deeks Centre designed to promote potential COMMUNITY Tauranga Boys’ College is investing in its students’ future with a new Athlete Development Centre – a purpose-built facility designed to support performance, wellbeing and long-term growth across a wide range of sports. Assistant principal and director of sport, Darrell Boyd, says the project reflects both the school’s strong sporting culture and the backing of a committed community. “The scope includes an athlete development centre, changing rooms, a recovery centre, physio spaces, an Old Boys’ lounge, and new sports administration offices,” Darrell says. “It is a significant step forward for how we support our young men.” “We are about turning young men into extraordinary young men.” The Ministry of Education initially committed $500,000 towards changing room upgrades, but later reprioritised this funding for teaching and learning spaces. This has meant 100% of the funds for this project have come from the board and the community. The board has committed $1.5 million from reserves, with the balance raised through community support across tiered donations and a ‘buy a brick’ initiative, alongside funding from organisations, including the Lion Foundation. As of early 2026, more than $3.14 million had been raised, with just over $1 million still required. “The community can clearly see the value in what we are doing,” Darrell says. “It is an investment in the young men coming through our school.” Sport plays a central role in the Tauranga Boys’ College identity, alongside education and culture. “We are about turning young men into extraordinary young men,” Darrell says. “Sport is one of the key ways we do that.” While known for rugby, the school has achieved results across multiple codes.
