It’s now owned and operated by his son, Bryan Downie, and Chris Kemp who bought the business when Colin retired in 2016. They’d both done their apprenticeship with Colin, Bryan 10 years before Chris, and are both steeped in the family values at the heart of the company. They continue to take pride in the standard of excellence the business has always operated by, and in serving the community just as Te Awamutu Plumbing and Drainage always has. Their team of 12 includes Gayle Wilson who’s been running things behind the scenes since before Bryan and Chris took on Colin’s legacy. Everything stayed the same including all the staff, some of whom had been there longer than she had. “We do it all: drainlaying, plumbing and gas. A key factor for us is that we don’t use a template for our quotes, we individualise them all. We look at your plans, we look at your site, and we work out the best way to do it and what’s needed. We don’t over quote because every quote is tailored to the specific project whether it’s a renovation, a subdivision, a new build or whatever,” says Gayle. Bryan and Chris are still on the tools which is exactly where they want to be, maintaining quality control, building the relationships that are at the core of their business, working alongside builders and clients and keeping on top of what’s happening in the community and in the industry as a whole. From general maintenance work across Te Awamutu, Ohaupo, Pirongia, Cambridge, Otorohanga and Hamilton, to larger projects with builders and corporates in Whitianga, New Plymouth, and Rotorua, their solid reputation has travelled well beyond their hometown. “We have a dedicated maintenance team too,” says Gayle. “So if you phone up with a leaky tap we know that it’s urgent when you’re paying for water, especially with the current financial climate when every penny helps, so we’ll get there as soon as we can. “We have someone rostered on call all the time and there’s someone on the end of the phone 24/7.” Regardless of the scope of work, they’re careful to make sure every detail is done right. If it’s a new build or alterations, they go through the plans with care and make sure everything plumbing wise is spot on before the slab goes down and again as the build gets underway. Bigger drainage jobs mean lots of planning and plenty of digging before getting the falls, the levels, and the placement of everything exactly where it’s meant to be in order to ensure everything flows as it should. Much of what they do will generally never be seen but doing it properly makes all the difference to the people who rely on it once the job’s done.
