For directors Chris Cullingworth, Glen Cullingworth, Dean Hudson and Mike Parker, the decision to join forces to establish their company in 2016 has proven pivotal in growing Hamilton-based CHP Electrical Services Ltd (CHP) to what it is today. A full-suite electrical contracting company, CHP is located near Hamilton Airport, with a team also working in Tauranga. Each director is actively engaged in the company’s daily operation, and. they are all passionate about the industry. “We bring our strengths to the table and each look after a particular part of the company. It’s a structure that serves the business and its employees well,” Mike says. These days, the team numbers 38 and has been operating at that level for a few years now. CHP delivers a wide array of services, from commercial and residential, data wiring, HVAC, and Test & Tag through to specialising in the medical sector. “That work is quite involved, given the specialised equipment and exacting standards that need to be met,” says Mike. “We undertake quite a lot of work, including maintenance at Waikato Hospital, Anglesea Hospital and Southern Cross Hospital. We recently fitted out the electrical work at the new renal centre at Waikato Hospital, as well as Beyond Radiology.” And through the years, CHP has been responsible for training and qualifying many electrical apprentices, an aspect of being in business that Mike says is particularly rewarding. “At this time we’re loaded more with qualified people than apprentices, and it’s been satisfying to see many of our apprentices stay on with the business and really contribute to its growth. It’s a great industry to be a part of. Technology developments and smart thinking are always evolving best practice, and we get to be involved with some really great projects.” Mike says another important element to why CHP has continued to offer its customers outstanding service is the culture on board, and the great benefit of this is that there isn’t a high turnover of staff. “One of the things I enjoy the most is actually watching the guys grow professionally and see them make a real career from applying their skills.” At an operational level, Mike undertakes the QS work and often teams up with a project manager to see a job through from initial tendering to completion. “I also look after the Health & Safety work. I think we’ve each settled on being responsible for those elements of the company we’re best suited for.” Mike says there isn’t the intention to grow the company larger in terms of the size of the team, noting that any development would require a leap into a new structure. “At the scale we are and with the capabilities of the team, we’re well-resourced to take on a wide array of project types. Our interest is to just keep on improving and to become more efficient.” A big part of why CHP Electrical Services is thriving is the collective desire to deliver the best-possible service to customers, regardless of the nature or size of the work. Workmanship is a value the whole team ascribes to. And looking back on recent years Mike says there have been some very engaging projects, including the work at NIWA’s new facility at Waikato University. With 2026 well underway, Mike says he and his fellow directors see the year progressing well. “While there are a lot of uncertainties, on the contracting side it is better than it was last year for sure.”
