64 | Sound Care Group COMMUNITY “In 2016, when the opportunity arose to acquire and lead my first rest home ... I held two unwavering beliefs: that residents in our care deserved far better, and that my team had the skill and heart to deliver it.” Carly Mangulabnan, Owner & Director of Sound Care Group Proud to support local business and our community 65 Colombo Street, Frankton, Hamilton 3204 T T Sue Russell Every resident is surrounded by an environment and a team who are there to encourage and support them living their best life. Dedicated to exceptional care Delivering the best possible care to the elderly and to those with a range of special needs is the single driving purpose and motivation of Sound Care Group, a health and residential lifestyle support organisation. Best described as a Culture of CARE, every resident is surrounded by an environment and a team who are there to encourage and support them living their best life. Tina Manuel, Sound Care’s Commission and Stakeholder Engagement Manager, says this year is proving to be yet another milestone moment, as Te Whare Manaaki o Tamahere, situated near Hamilton Airport, prepares to open soon. “This is such an exciting time for us. Along with five other facilities we own and manage, throughout the Waikato, in Dunedin and in Taranaki, this new residential care home is being designed to deliver an exceptional standard of care and support to those who will live here long-term or for shorter respite stays.” This March, Tina was in the middle of gaining the necessary fire-rating and systems approvals, with just a couple of weeks away from full consents and sign-off. “There’s so much that needs to come together in the right order when opening a residential care home. We’ve taken over part of an existing facility and making all the necessary changes and upgrades, along with bringing together our team of managers and support staff, so there’s plenty happening.” Already, there’s significant interest from individuals and partner organisations, such as Te Whatu Ora and ACC, to reserve rooms for clients. Tina says, with the reputation Sound Care Group has in delivering age and need-appropriate care to a wide range of people requiring additional support, she’s not surprised by that level of interest to date. And much thought is going into the planning of communal areas, such as the kitchen, Tina explains. “We know that some of our disability residents will want to cook for themselves, so we’re taking good time to really think through how this critical space will best support them to be as independent as possible.” Tina says accessibility and comfort are key elements determining how the floorplan of the home has been grounded. “We know it’s important that spaces are easy to move around in and that they are spacious and quiet. Supporting independence is a key focus for us and even small details like each room having its own pantry, accessible bathrooms with plenty of space and direct access to the outdoors all add to the quality of life which is our highest priority.” In all, 80 beds will be made available in specially designed and fitted out rooms for residents to enjoy and feel ownership of. When Te Whare Manaaki o Tamahere first opens its doors, catering will be supplied from a sister site in Hamilton. Special thought has also being given to the outside spaces. “We know just how important it is for people to feel peace and see beauty around them while they are with us. It all adds to the quality of their life to experience being in lovely surrounds.” Along with Te Whare Manaaki o Tamahere, Sound Care Group currently provides rest home and care options at facilities, located in Hamilton East, Cambridge, Dunedin, Eltham Taranaki and at Athenree in the Bay of Plenty. “We have a strong focus on residents maintaining independence for as long as possible because we know this is a huge factor in quality of life. Careful assessment is made of each person’s needs in order to provide them with absolutely what they need and as a resident’s care needs evolve, we’re there each step of the way.”
