T T Sue Russell Solutions for every logistics challenge Delivering tailored, end-to-end freight and distribution services and finding logistics solutions is all part of the core service. In 1981 Keith Hobbs established Aucklandbased Hobbs Global Logistics Solutions, a business offering clients an array of services aligned to importing and exporting goods, supply chain management, warehousing capability and customs brokerage. Today, the company is led by Managing Director Darren Brown who joined the business in 2011, beginning as a junior customs broker and in successive years working his way through the business’s various divisions. In all, 26 staff are engaged at one of Hobbs Global’s two sites: a warehouse at Auckland Airport and at headquarters in Albany, on Auckland’s North Shore. Darren says a core strength of the company is the quality of the highly skilled team. “We’re fortunate to have a very solid staff retention through the years with a good number of the team having been with us now 10+ years. My role is to oversee the team and the company’s strategies and overall direction across our three primary areas.” In the 1980s the business began primarily offering customs brokerage services, engaging with government agencies such as New Zealand Customs and MPI, ensuring NZ standards were adhered to in the process of importing or exporting goods. Added to that a freight forwarding division links clients with a wide network of international freight management agents. “If you come to us as a client, wanting to import product from anywhere in the world, we have close affiliations with agents that work locally in most countries to facilitate this.” The final core service activity is to operate in third-party logistics, through Hobbs’ warehousing facility. “The thing about logistics is that you always have to be working out of the box, always thinking about the best way to do something and it’s fair to say the last five to seven years have been challenging, going through COVID times and the disruption that brought, dealing with how manic things got soon after, but one of our strengths is to manage riding the waves.” And with the current fuel crisis caused by factors well beyond domestic control, Darren says managing around the inflationary tensions is a growing challenge. Delivering tailored, end-to-end freight and distribution services and finding logistics solutions is all part of the core service offering, from the company that started small and grew as opportunities presented. “We’re very proud of the fact that we’ve remained 100% New Zealand owned and operated and we like to think of ourselves as a one-stop-shop for any freight needs our clients have. They know if they come to us, there’s a wealth of experience we bring to the table and the fact that we have many longterm customers indicates we deliver on our service commitments.” The company utilised Cargowise, a freight management system and its online interface NEO which gives clients real-time freight status information. This allows for clients to receive live visibility over international shipments and warehouse receipts and orders. “My strategic focus at this time of uncertainty with the impact of the war and with an election year looming is to maintain our market share by delivering the best service consistently that we’ve built our reputation on. If we continue to do this, then we remain in a positive position going ahead.”
