CONSTRUCTION STACK Interiors Auckland-based STACK Interiors has a passion for creating uplifting, peoplefocussed workplaces tailored to clients’ unique needs. Fuelling that tailored service is the power of diversity. Having a wide range of skills and experience on the team, combined with a collaborative approach, is their superpower. The award-winning design practice is a proud sponsor of the National Association of Women in Construction NZ (NAWIC) that connects, educates and advocates, so women thrive at all levels in Aotearoa New Zealand’s construction sector. “At STACK, we have a really strong ratio of women to men and many of our leadership positions are led by women,” observes Lauren Ross, STACK’s Design Studio Manager. “A lot of our 30-strong team engage with NAWIC and their events, so a few years ago we thought ‘let’s formalise it’ with this sponsorship and support NAWIC to continue their amazing work.” As Lauren notes, three of STACK’s four senior designers are women. Their two intermediate designers and two graduate designers are women. STACK has a strong commitment to supporting promising young designers, also reflected in their sponsorship of Toi Manahau Designers Institute of New Zealand Student Category. Leading the company’s technical team is Sally Vandal while Sheila Ye, Head of Client Relationships, leads the company’s key client facing role. Women are also making their mark in various QS and HR roles. STACK Interiors recently delivered inspiring new workplaces for Mott MacDonald and One. NZ at 30 Daldy Street in Wynyard Quarter. Senior designers Jacquette Barrington and Anna Travis, together with Iva Parapunova and Sarah Hansford, were heavily involved in the design of both projects. As work progressed on site, STACK opened up an opportunity for NAWIC members to go take a look. “We did that to ensure that members of NAWIC could get into a live construction site, right in the middle of delivery. Fifty guests joined us, moving through the building in groups, gaining insights on the fit-out design process, safety and construction methodology. It’s an example of how we engage with NAWIC, in addition to the team going to NAWIC events.” The design focus for both of these recent projects was on the end user experience and creating connectedness. “One of the recurring themes is ‘better than home’, drawing out of this idea of coming back to the office and creating spaces where people are connected — to information, to each other, to ideas. We create spaces that people want to be in.” STACK’s team gathers once a week for a practice-wide work-in-progress meeting. “Everyone’s voice is listened to at the table and all are encouraged to participate.” Last year, their inclusive, diverse team won the prestigious 2025 Interior Award in the over 1000sqm workplace category for the design and build of UDC Finance’s new workplace at 50 Albert Street. UDC presented a layered brief for a functional and flexible workplace that would also showcase their company purpose and brand.
