BUILDING Progressive Builders Hamish Hayden has come full circle in his career, taking on a project for the very builder he apprenticed with. The Upper Ohauiti Road house in Tauranga, which his company Progressive Builders is currently working on, represents the trust and confidence his former mentor, Russell Braithwaite, has in him to bring the complex project to life. “This project will really show the quality Progressive Builders can achieve and the eye for detail we have. We really focus on making everything as good as it can possibly be,” says Hayden. Hayden established Progressive Builders in 2024 after accumulating five to six years of hands-on building experience. His company focuses on residential construction throughout the Bay of Plenty, specialising in new builds, renovations, extensions, refurbishments, decks, fences and sheds. Based in Tauranga, it operates locally, but also takes on projects further afield depending on client needs. A cornerstone of Progressive Builders’ approach is cultivating strong relationships with clients and maintaining open communication throughout a project. “We make sure projects stay on track, and create an open environment where people feel free to express ideas to achieve the best result. It’s building done well, focusing on the core aspects that make a great build,” says Hayden. The Upper Ohauiti Rd home, situated in a slightly rural area of Tauranga, is a single-level house spanning 230sqm and featuring a mix of cedar and aerated concrete cladding. It includes four bedrooms, an ensuite off the master bedroom, a main bathroom, a separate toilet, and an open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area with a separate media room. A walk-in pantry complements the kitchen, while a large ranch slider opens on to a verandah, revealing panoramic views of the sea, Mt Maunganui, and Tauranga city. Some of the complex aspects of the build include an attached carport and a 173sqm garage/shed built into a bank, with three floor levels allowing drive-in access from the bottom and a side entry higher up. A 40sqm bar/games area upstairs offers a view looking back over Mt Maunganui. Working with Russell, who has been closely involved with the design and council consents, has been an affirmation for Hayden. “It demonstrates the trust he has in me, and it’s been great working with him on his own project.” Progressive Builders is a team of five, with Hayden on the tools and additional contract builders brought on as required. This handson approach allows him to ensure every project is executed to his high standards. Earlier this year, the company completed a 110sqm spec build in Brookfield, Tauranga, aimed at first-home buyers. Looking ahead, Progressive Builders has several projects lined up, including a new high-end home in Whitianga Waterways, and an extensive renovation and addition of a partial secondstorey and reclad for a Tauranga home.
