Having worked in the company since leaving school at age 17, it made perfect sense to James Munday, now owner/operator of Alan Wilson Building (AW Building Ltd), to purchase the company from its founder. Six years ago, James achieved full ownership of the busy Tokoroa building company, and since then he has brought a new business into the fold, in the form of South Waikato Homes. “This company has always been very versatile in terms of the array of projects it takes on and we extend through to Taupo as well. Being based in Tokoroa is a great place to operate from,” says James. South Waikato Homes was formed about three years ago, offering transportable homes through the Bunnings Clever Living brand. Having this added capability means the business can basically turn its hand to any type of building situation, and it’s this flexibility, James says, that creates an environment ripe for apprentices to learn a range of valuable skills. “We do a lot of work in the renovation/alteration space, and for those new to the trade, it’s a wonderful way to hone a wide array of essential building skills. Over the years, we’ve helped a large number of apprentices to qualify, and that’s a really good feeling.” James says BCITO offer a solid training pathway to those entering the trade. “The organisation has the right amount of trainers, and they retain regular contact with our apprentices, so I think the system is pretty good.” Jobs can extend from very small to large, such as the Tokoroa Hospital Emergency Department upgrade, while a core activity is in the insurance space, working for companies such as Tower Insurance, James says. “We had a major flood event in Taupo last year, which kept us busy, and the insurance work just adds another string to our bow.” As the largest building entity in Tokoroa, and with a longevity that extends back 40-plus years, AW Building Ltd currently engages six admin staff and 14 on the tools, a size James says works well, given the scope of work that crosses his desk. “We’re in a comfortable position – able to combine our staff on the bigger jobs while working in smaller crews. I have some staff who have been with us now for 20-plus years, and we currently have four apprentices on board.” James knows what makes the business tick, and why it has endured through a period in “I have some staff who have been with us now for 20-plus years, and we currently have four apprentices on board.” the industry when things have been tough. “We deliver full turn-key projects, and having the diversity of projects we take on keeps our employees engaged. “I know we do things properly, and enjoy a strong level of repeat customer work, which says we’re delivering great service.” South Waikato is a region opening up to new development, both in the commercial and residential sectors, something James says is supported by a council intent on promoting the region as a place for families and businesses to settle. He says this positive energy only bodes well for the future. “As we stand at the moment, the company is a good size, and I’m fortunate to have a depth of building capability that means we can turn our hand to any form of work. Having Clever Living Homes as part of our offering only strengthens our situation here.” We h a v e a g r e a t t e am o f Ma s t e r T i l e r s .
