28 | Regional leader expands services Hamilton-based WPM Group has continued to grow, with core activities around building, painting, electrical, outdoor works and maintenance. WPM Group T T Sue Russell “One of our strengths is undertaking ‘out of the box’ bespoke modifications for specific injuries.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Business life started as Waikato Property Maintenance, Scott Mathieson says, but before long the name pigeon-holed the company into being seen as just maintenance. However, with its growing array of capabilities it had grown into a multi-disciplinary building company. “So we changed the name to WPM Group, which much better reflected its situation, having grown substantially as Licensed Builders with an electrical division on board. This happened within the first 18 months of trade,” says Scott. This was back in 2019/20 and since then Hamilton-based WPM Group has continued to grow, with core activities around building, painting, electrical, outdoor works and maintenance. Scott’s a qualified electrician and along with brother Dane and wife Jennifer, a chartered accountant, the team oversaw the business growing exponentially post-Covid. Then in March 2024, the business evolved once more, when Access l Partners in Property acquired WPM. “This integration allowed Access to expand its outreach of property maintenance and construction services in the Waikato,” Scott says. “Before this, they had a small satellite entity. It just made sense from a business development perspective for us and for them.” The sale and merging meant WPM gained from more support from head office in Auckland, particularly with HR, Heath & Safety and Finance, leaving Scott and the team free to concentrate on delivering their service offering to clients in an efficient and cost-effective way. The teams for Access and WPM share facilities at Maui Street, Pukete, in Hamilton’s northern quarter, a strategically sound location, close to main arterial routes around the city and to the Waikato expressway, linking it easily to other Waikato locations. Scott acknowledges 2025 h had its fair share of challenges, but is cautiously optomistic about 2026. “We’ve contracted a little bit reducing from 23 to 17 in the field. We’ve been a little bit cautious around hiring and replacement.” “Being in the Waikato, the regional economy is impacted by how things are in the agricultural sectors and it’s good to see indicators showing a stronger rural economy emerging of late.” A large part of the company’s revenue stream is in the disability space, renovating and modifying homes to cater for those with physical special needs. “One of our strengths is undertaking ‘out of the box’ bespoke modifications for specific injuries,” says Scott. “Building hydraulic lifts and the like to enable those with a physical injury or condition to safely move. “We work closely with architects and occupational therapists and cover the whole of the Waikato and beyond, depending on the modification required.” As such Scott and the team are on the Approved Contractors List for ACC and the Ministry of Health. And with 2025 drawing to an end, Scott says the team are looking forward to some well-earned down-time before taking up the challenges and opportunities that the New Year will present. “I’m happy with our size and situation at this time. It’s been a big journey to date from when we started. We have a great team of highly skilled tradespeople on board and a broad capability that serves our clients and customers well.” Quotes@completeflooring.co.nz 07 242 0290 Completeflooring.co.nz Commercial and Residential Flooring Specialists
