Clinton Rolfe had been working in the transport and logistics industry for 25 years when the privately owned company he had been working for decided to sell. Rather than become part of the corporate world he decided to set up his own family-owned and operated company, Titus Transport Limited. People tend to think of trucking as a solitary pursuit but Clinton’s clear that while you may be driving alone for hours, especially if you’re driving line haul, it’s fundamentally a people game, he explains. “Nothing happens without the people. The product is service which is provided by the people and finding people is easy but finding and retaining the right people is key so that’s what we focus on as well as providing them the opportunity to grow themselves.” After 13 years Titus Transport Limited, despite being a relatively small player in the industry, is increasingly well known which Clinton puts down to the concept of service that drives the company. “We take it personally, so if it’s a job well done, we give ourselves a pat on the back but if we get it wrong, and everyone gets it wrong some time or other, we go straight into recovery mode. “We front up, apologise and sort it out as fast as possible so we’re pro-active and super quick.” These days Titus Transport Limited has around 60 staff on the payroll, including Clinton’s brothers, sons, and nephews, and numerous contractors who are themselves generally from family-owned businesses, some of them into their third generation. They have 70 trucks operating out of depots in Auckland, Hastings, Rotorua, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch as they transport general freight in their predominantly curtain-sider trucks, calling on trusted contractors if they need any specialised equipment such as a hi-ab, a crane or a flatbed truck. Titus Transport Limited embraces technology including the TMS (Transport System) and the WMS (Warehouse System) that allow it to integrate with customers’ systems and avoid the need for manual data entry which for some customers is vital. But regardless of technology what remains important to every customer is that they know their load is going to get picked up as scheduled and delivered on time. Clinton knows that the best technology in the world won’t get them anywhere without the right people and that you need both to achieve the ultimate result which in this case is providing the sort of service that Titus is known for, combining flexibility with respect regardless of the size of the job. “Everyone deserves the same standard of service. They pay for it, and we need to provide it, and that’s what we focus on.” Clinton never loses sight of making sure all the little things are done correctly in order to ensure the bigger things follow suit, which means they consistently achieve their promise to deliver intra-island freight overnight to main centres, and to inter-island main centres within two. He knows that boils down to the team, his most valuable asset. Family is important at Titus Transport Limited. Working alongside family in the business, knowing all the staff and their whanau matter to him, and having opportunities for staff to prosper and learn comes with the job. If you want to work and you’re prepared to learn, they’re happy to give you a job, Clinton explains. “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist, but you have to have the right attitude. “It’s people who enjoy providing a service and understand that they may be only just one cog but they’re an integral part of the bigger machine that makes Titus what it is. “We don’t care whether you’ve dropped out of school or just got out of prison if you want to step up, we’ll help you get your licenses, or we’ll send you to the course you need to do to be the leader of a logistics team or whatever. We want people to leave better than when they came.” Transporting anything from coffee beans ready for roasting, to digger buckets for civil engineering works, with 70% of their customers SME’s (Small to Medium Enterprises), Clinton makes sure that Titus understands your needs before you sign up, so they can ensure you get the trademark quality service with attractive rates they pride themselves on.
