| 61 Building a lower carbon future for construction Sustainability has become a core driver of Golden Bay’s long-term strategy. Golden Bay Cement DEVELOPMENT As New Zealand’s construction sector continues to face increasing pressure around sustainability, emissions reduction, and responsible material sourcing, attention is turning to one of the most fundamental ingredients in the built environment: cement. Golden Bay Cement’s EcoFast HE cement represents a major step forward in reducing the environmental impact of concrete and structural building products, while maintaining the performance and consistency the industry demands. Produced at Golden Bay’s Portland Manufacturing Plant in Northland, the only fully integrated cement manufacturing facility remaining in New Zealand, EcoFast is designed specifically for local conditions and modern construction requirements. The Portland plant has now celebrated over a century of cement production at the site, and continues to lead the industry through innovation and sustainability-focused manufacturing. Sustainability has become a core driver of Golden Bay’s long-term strategy. The company has committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 30% by 2030, supported by major changes in fuel sourcing, material inputs, and circular waste solutions. One of the most significant developments has been Golden Bay’s investment in alternative fuels to reduce reliance on coal. Through partnerships that include end-oflife tyre recycling, the company has already diverted millions of tyres from landfill — displacing fossil fuels in the kiln process. As of June 2022, Golden Bay was processing approximately 30,000 tonnes of tyres per year, reducing emissions by an estimated 24,000 tonnes of CO2 in just 15 months. EcoFast cement is used across commercial, industrial, and residential construction, including structural concrete, precast applications, mortars, and grouts. Its finer grain size makes it particularly suitable for precast products where high early strength performance is critical. Importantly, EcoFast is supported by a verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), produced in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards. This provides designers, contractors, and developers with credible data to support sustainability reporting and Green Star project requirements. Golden Bay’s approach highlights a wider shift occurring across the New Zealand building supply chain: reducing emissions not by asking customers to change how they build, but by improving the materials themselves. With infrastructure investment continuing nationwide and environmental accountability becoming the new standard, Golden Bay says products such as EcoFast will play an increasingly central role in shaping a lower-carbon construction future.
