Best Nest Building Company “If we need someone we’ll offer them the job as carpenter or site supervisor, because they already know our systems and the way we want things delivered.” BUILDING Luke Jones and James Bird started their company Best Nest Building in 2016 having become friends over the previous years building light commercial projects for an Auckland developer. James’ surname is Bird, and when he and Luke had a laugh remembering being read the children’s book Best Nest by PB Eastman when they were young, the company name was an easy decision, Luke explains. “I’ve actually got a copy of it sitting on my desk. It’s about two birds, a male and a female, and she wants a new nest, but realises that the one that they’ve got is the best nest. When we do work for clients with children we give them a copy of it as a thank you gift.” As they have grown the company over the years, Luke and James have each naturally gravitated to the roles they most enjoy, with James now largely running things on-site and Luke stepping more into the office role, meeting clients and running things behind the scenes. Recently, their focus has moved from commercial to residential and, whatever the project, they work closely with their clients to meet their expectations and deliver on time and on budget, whether it’s a small renovation or a sizeable new build. Best Nest Building runs two teams, which include six apprentices ranging from brandnew to third- and fourth-year. James and Luke would rather upskill the apprentices they are working with already, than bring in anyone new. “If we need someone we’ll offer them the job as carpenter or site supervisor, because they already know our systems and the way we want things delivered,” says Luke Two former apprentices are now site supervisors, working on the tools, running the site day-to-day, ordering what’s needed, and dealing with the subcontractors to ensure they deliver to Best Nest standards. Delivering their typically one-off bespoke builds to a high standard is fundamental to what Best Nest does, whatever the project. Luke and James have fine-tuned their process over the last 10 years as they field enquiries that typically come through word of mouth, frequently via their website, which Luke responds to by sending out a brief questionnaire. Once he is confident the interest is genuine, he sends out an information pack about Best Nest in a wooden box, which includes a bottle of wine along with information about 10-year certified building guarantees for any job over $30,000, plus paint samples and interior design information, depending on the nature of the job. The box is designed to get people excited about what’s to come, even if they have been bogged down in council consent processes for longer than they expected. An on-site meeting and further questions to allow Luke to understand more about the build and the client’s budget leads to either working together to get plans drawn up or, if they are already drawn, Best Nest will price the build in a detailed, transparent and comprehensive way. The software they use on the job is client facing, giving them a log-in that allows them to follow the build as closely as they wish, and clear communication with James and the site supervisor is a given. “Then we just do the job really, and handover an awesome build,” says Luke. It could be finessing a seamless finish on a new house clad in cedar shiplap in Omaha, or making the new extension on an old house in Mt Eden look like it’s always been there, whatever the project, Luke and James both enjoy the challenge that comes with architectural builds, sorting out any issues, and with the attention to detail that guarantees a good finish.
